Side Bite fin installation question...
« on: November 19, 2014, 04:09:03 PM »
:-\ For a thruster fin configuration, do you guys install the side bite fins with the flat side facing in toward the center fin, or out?  A brief google search turned up no mention of this dilemma.  I'm thinking flat side out, because these fins are there to assist in tighter or quicker turns, so you'd want the "lift" vector to point toward the center fin.

What say you?

Foiled sides inward with the angle outward toward the rails, if there is an angle.  Or so said the shop guy when he noted mine were in backwards.

Was he laughing when you left?

The outer foil of a thruster creates lift to pull the fin into the face of the wave, the double foiled rear fin then serves to pivot, and holds the tail of the board down. On a few windsurfers (Realwind especially) there are reversed thrusters (foil inward) that serve to loosen the tail and increase pressure on the front of the main fin to reduce cavitation. But that's the only place I've ever seen thrusters turned flat foil out.

Oh, and on some quad setups the front fins might be canted outwards, but any angle built into the thrusters is usually towards the centerline. Think of the fin trusting the rail into the wave face and you're pretty much there. I can't think or any circumstance where you'd want the rail to be thrust away from the face, except maybe some kind of automatic 360 thing.

I guess I should say FLAT  foil inwards and curved foil outwards.  I am narrowing the cynosure of my kookdom, but I still leak.  The shop guy didn't laugh, but he guffawed a little.

Don't feel bad, there's plenty of shop guys that don't know squat. I've listened to them talk and been astounded by the bad advice. Some huge exceptions--the old Bob's Mission Surf, Gorge Performance. Big winds, Surf Sports. Pretty much nothing but gospel there, but anywhere else you takes yer chances. Even Infinity has some kooks behind the counter unless there a Bohne present.

That's great. I've seen a lot of people waxing the bottom of their surfboards.

It might be because you're using the youtu.be link in stead of the youtube.co… link though I thought the admin had fixed that in the last update. Might as well test my theory:
