Wave snot
« on: November 11, 2014, 03:57:11 PM »
Full disclosure here - I have a big schnoz.

If I take a couple waves on the head I end up with my head full of salt-water which soon becomes snotty salt water looking to get out. The bad thing is when I recover and lean into paddling, my nose unloads and pretty soon I have a snotty paddle handle, which is slippery, I might add. If I try to intersperse swipes at my nose between strokes then I have a snotty arm. If I just let my nose drain freely, then the chicas in the line-up will think I am a gross old fart, which may be true but I really don't want it to be so obvious.

So what do those of you more experienced in these matters do with unwanted mucous ejecta?

Mine generally dumps on my dinner plate, the nicer the restaurant, the bigger the splash. Count your blessings and snot on.

Mine dumped right in the middle of a job interview back in the late 80s in San Diego, needless to say I didn't get the job, but the morning surf session was worth it.

If someone in San Diego didn't hire you because you had an touch of ocean in your sinuses then you probably didn't want the job.

A guy showed up for an interview at B&J with an obvious hangover. He asked if he could reschedule. Said a buddy of his lost his wife to breast cancer a year ago, so he went to his house to have a few beers and hang out with him and they got into the hard stuff. I told him he could reschedule if he liked, but I was the most pointless interview in the company. I wouldn't be hiring him, my function was to sell him on working for the company, and I could do that then and there, as long as he didn't puke on my carpet. He didn't wind up working for us, wasn't what we were looking for, but I considered his hangover to be a big plus in the character column.

It is in fact a technique. My wife has a tiny nose and my nose is almost to the point at which I can use it to scoop peanuts off a plate. When we're done surfing she often has a bunch of liquid just randomly drain out her nose.  I've never had that problem.  I'd tell you more about my technique but I have no idea what I'm doing different.  I think it's just something you learn naturally with a few games of water polo or sessions on the high dive.

Absolutely right Pono…..It was some stuck up advertising agency who were not the least bit amused…I would have hated working for them anyway and glad the way things turned out.

I picked up my granddaughter from pre-school one day after surfing. I was getting her in her car seat when my sinuses dumped in her lap....the look I got was priceless....accompanied by an "eeeewwww....gross!". Then I told her it was saltwater from surfing....."Oh...that's OK then....is my nose going to spout like Elmo (her friend the humpback) when I go surfing?".

These things work great.  Keeps water out of the sinuses, zero wave snot, prevents sinus infections, and doesn't look as stupid as a nose clip.  In fact, others can hardly see them.
