A Cape Cod Public Service Announcement -
« on: October 29, 2014, 06:29:39 PM »
I know it's not SUP, but close enough!!

Unedited ---

I know, I know, I’ve been shooting my mouth of about skipping out work to surf or sail. Every now and then, I actually do it. At 1, it looked good, so I jumped and planned to race up to Kalmus, to hopefully catch Boardsurfr. Great luck happened when Hardie texted me and said 3 of the solid Kalmus crew - Peter, Martin and Drew were on their way to my home town beach Skaket. How cool was that, 4 guys that I’ve sailed with over the years, come’n for a party.

After watching a little too much slogging, I rigged a 6 and seemed to be the most powered up. When the wind was up it was great, full-on, slightly over powered and loving the company in my backyard!

Towards the session’s tail end and on an outbound tack, into the chop and the sun’s glare, everything was a little crazy except for one thing running at periscope depth. It was so subtle and brief, I dismissed it as shark hysteria.

Haul’n @ss, I kept on going. The next lap out, slightly underpowered, was no sharking siting. It was a full blown shark interface. It vectored my approach and swam right under my board. The back fin and tail fin were fully exposed and its body was just below the water line. It was wiggling just like in Jerry’s boat siting video. I’m surprised that I didn’t feel it, it was that close. H0Ly Sh!t, what a fine time to start sloggin!. I got out of the straps and pumped and pumped, trying to get back on a plane. After a ¼ mile, I dumped a light wind turn. I impressed myself with a lightning fast water start. On the way back in, the wind had dropped enough that I couldn’t get strapped in. I just ran with the wind and ended up in the mouth of little Namskaket.

WTF!!

Good morning

Slept like rock, but still feeling a chill

I was on a mid 70l old school Doug Haut - My lifelong love

I'd say the shark was a 10'r or so.

I could have sworn that it had a white tip on the dorsal fin.  My coworker and friend, who's paid to know about these things, said I must have been mistaken.  Maybe it had a little fin damage.

Trust me you fellow kiters out there, it was the real deal

ronC... cripes... that's the kiddie beach. The Mommies aren't gonna like that.
they're everywhere, they're everywhere. Getting so you can't relax around here.

Wonder how long before I see one in my flat-water "creeks"

Very strange goings on.....i now know more people who have seen a fish while in the water this year, than people who haven't.

3 years ago we were sailing Chatham cut routinely.  That's over in part because it's too hard to get past the bystanders and their questions.

And what's with the Mola?  Truthfully more creepy than the whites, and they are EVERYWHERE!

i have no issues, it is what it is.  I was told to "Ask Permission"  before i enter the water....always do,..... and anyway, any bad outcome would be righteous for me.

The thread on the kids had me wanting to boast, this is my youngest on a home shaped single he wanted, .....but truthfully, my guys are surfing more off-cape this year....Brendan, Marc and I all had kids in the water during one seal-hit.....kind of changes perspective

Seeing seals in Crows Pond is spooky. We know why they are there. My encounter up close and personal on the Outer ended my fog lifting dawn patrols a while back.

Kids and grandkids can certainly change our perspectives. Mine was changed when I saw a three foot fin fifty feet away on a fourteen footer. B-Mac, Dylan and a bunch of young rippers were all whistling at me. I thought they were just messing with me until I saw the fin.

Never paddled my longboard so fast in my life!

Feel much better on a SUP - but the risk is there as we all know...
Let it come to you..

70L??

Kinda like a taco bowl.  Nice presentation, and edible w/o being too filling.   ;D

Can't imagine being on a kiteboard in that situation.
Maybe kiting will be "cancelled" next??  ::)

Mola? Sunfish? I love seeing those guys.

I wonder why your friend said a white tip was impossible. It could certainly have been an oceanic whitetip. Their range is global. In many ways they are more badass than great whites. They are pelagic, so they can show up anywhere. Probably most of the people who initially survive a major ship sinking but are later taken by sharks are taken by whitetips.

Mola Mola  yeah they are everywhere this year....OK.... not creepy, just funny fish

I was wondering about a whitetip, but very uncommon here.  however,
This was deep inside Cape Cod Bay,  it does tend to trap migrating species

Well move'n on, I guess.

Many experts(??) told me what I saw today.

This is what I quickly picked off the web --

The oceanic whitetip shark can be found from Maine in the United States.....

Depending on geographic location, the body color may be brown.....

Hi Ron... FYI I'm in the process of developing a new prototype seat harness. Part diaper, part harness geared for shark sightings and bowl movements. Looking for team riders I'm going to call it the DEPENDS SEAT HARNESS. You in?  ;D
