There are horror stories from surfing there. I've seen it first hand. Nasty quiet lawsuit with a friends son who almost died a few years ago. Sewage leak up the creek that was hushed. I will not surf there or allow my daughter to. Then you have the harbor water right there and some of the boaters are emptying their holding tanks at night or just before coming back into the harbor. This was one of the most pristine areas before the harbor......

Not to mention a world-class surf break.

The only time I have had an ear infection was after
surfing the clear waters in Laguna Beach.
Found out that their sewer lines are really old and leaking...
Lots of surface creep in that area...remember the Bluebird Canyon slide...

Deceiving for sure, looked clean but...

I was at Camp SUP and no sickness for me.

Did the doctor say if it was viral or bacterial?  If it's not responding to antibiotics it's probably viral and likely did not come from contaminated water.  These viruses can come from anybody you had contact with in the few days prior to the symptoms appearing.

I'm not a doctor but I have dealt with doctors on this issue.  I'm in the water a couple times a week and my son prones 5-6 times a week in South OC.

No doubt you can catch stuff there but
a week is a pretty long incubation period.

Have surfed Doheny a bunch and never had a problem, although I cringe if I think too much about the water and generally avoid the surf at any location (most especially Doheny) for at least 48 hours after a rain.  Longer is better.

My answer to the Doheny issue:    I always do an immediate and thorough rinseoff at the shower that involves a good flushing of the eyes, ears, and sinuses (I actually inhale some water through the nose to blast everything out).

Maybe I've just been lucky though....

Gotta break here in FL that makes me sick.  Maypoles.  Big cargo ships in and out of the channel pollute the break that is the "go to" on a stiff n'oreaster.

It does sound like a virus and it is THE season. Handling things that a lot of other people have handled can be the transmission point.

The ocean is more likely the culprit with bacterial infections.  Given the choice, I would rather have a cold/virus that clears up in days/weeks than some of the bacterial things that are making the rounds these days.

I surf Doheny a lot and luckily have not gotten sick.  Definitely stay away after rains or if the water quality report is bad: http://ocbeachinfo.com/danapoint/doheny

If you do surf there like I do all summer, do Not ingest the water if at all possible, and bring a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide for even the most minor scrapes and cuts.  I've had a few get ugly without attention.

not viral >>>>definitely bacteria  had blood work and  all sorts of test done   surfed there twice in 5 years and got sick both times  . both were at high tide with  not much cleansing energy form the ocean swells  ie  no swell  warm  semi stagnant     yeah both times fell off and got  water in sinuses..   I wont surf there again  in my mind another reason for all sup events  to leave doheny alone.   to all of you who surf there good luck.

The proners there have engineered a virus they have released in the waters of DoHo.  If only infects SUPers who go north of the hammer.

Just wait until they have figured out how to engineer paddle borne Ebola!
