Rickers,  Save your ticket money for that trip south you'll need this winter.. Yikes! little brother, Gonzo, should give you guys some fun Saturday.  RiverUK could probably tell us, but those Atlantic storms look like they create havoc rather than throw corduroy waves.

You're right about that. The storm is too wide and southerly for most coasts
over here.  Prevailing winds strong out of the south here.  I just sent some visiting
friends to Mundaka, the north coast of Spain will be offshore for the peak days of the swell.
I gotta work and will only catch the smaller but cleaner tail end of the swell next week.

Here the only surfable spot will be inside a protected bay, breaks at a quarter of the ocean swell
size but cleaner.

That is a pretty cool visualization.  http://earth.nullschool.net/

What are those little dark appendages that the wind seems to want to curl around?

The clockwise curls show the low pressure points, northern hemisphere.

It's gonna honk at La Torche. I thought La Torche pro was this weekend, but it's in 10 days.

Yeah, but this thing isn't a point, more like pointy.

Those black holes are more easily understood  when viewed on the live nullskool site.

I like to think of them as the center of the battle zone between the high and low pressure systems.

They are the wild card when trying to predict exact wind direction, at a specific beach, at a specific time.

Wind forecasts tend to be regionalized.... even more detailed local forecasts can be subject to a lot of variation if they are near any of the many "black holes" on the wind fronts.

By watching the movements of these irregularities over time, you can get a better handle on what the wind will do at the beach you are hoping to surf, at the time you plan to go out.

Here is the "Appendage" or "Black hole" effect at my local right now. Just 10 miles makes all the difference in our morning surf session. By watching how it has progressed during the day, I am certain that I will wake up to offshore conditions.

Nite nite..... ;D

Got a text from Angulo in LaTorche for the PWA event.

"Had a legitimate big scary fun waveriding session in France today"

......if you don't know Josh,,.....if he says it was big and scary......................well

We can play all day in head high, but those boyz are on a different level

Pretty sure this is where they sailed...never seemed survivable to me:

Too many for the rack
Some in the shack
Some under decks
Some have straps

Not as big as the big swell in the beginning of the month harassed by strong sideshores the whole time.

My local, 6-8' shorebreak reforms and 8-10' on the outside. Nobody out.

That's what Lafitania is for  ;D ;D

I have been going through my old surf photo's to make a display for the "Nauset Surf Film & Music Festival" that sets up a local "Surf History Exhibit" with old boards, photos and memorabilia from the early days of surfing on Cape Cod. I started in 1964... before anyone knew how to turn. I got to be a grom when we were ALL groms. ;D ;D

Anyway... yesterday, I came across these shots from Lafitania in August of 1972, the summer I stayed in Biarritz and surfed all the awesome breaks from Lafitania to Hossegor, so I thought I would add them to the thread.

These shots are all from Lafitania... #2 & 3 are Rodney Sumpter (English Champ) working the shore break at the end of the wave. The emblem from the "Surf Club de France" has gotta be a classic. there were very few boards available for the local surfers, so I sold mine to a local guy when I left.... possibly a pink railed Weber Australia.

What a great area for surf.... so many good breaks..... and beautiful shoreline in Biarritz.

Creek, you were lucky to have visited while the area was still virginal.

Lafit is now the tightest local spot on the coast, I miss it.
Guéthary is still accessable, granted with a thickly skinned double anti-hate suit
and some manners, but the gem in your shots is a no go zone with a paddle. Thanks for the pics :)

Luckily still not as crazy as Cali here, still some overlooked nooks and crannies.
