German balls of steel......
« on: October 06, 2014, 10:38:41 AM »
If you've ever had the speed wobbles, this will bring you back. Oh to be young again?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwFek4V5aP4&feature=youtu.be

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Weird.  I was just out in the garage fondling my old longboards.  I tripped for a minute on the poached Great Smoky Mountain runs.  I wonder if I still have those hockey puck gloves?

Don't miss the road rash though.

I used to live at the top of Alpine Meadows ski area road many (many) years ago at almost 7,000 foot elevation. I skated down to the bottom of the road almost every summer day. I love this guy's skid technique to slow down. I would go through dozens of left tennis shoes using them as a drag brake. Lucky for me I never went down at speed.

This video really brings back that same scary feeling in the pit of my stomach watching him get the speed wobbles. Balls of steel or young and dumb, either way it's a great video.

I want to say more but 45?  You have to crank those trucks tight to get there.  But west coast pros and new gear might blow that out of the water. I'm so old when it comes to the limits...  His body slide didn't look that long.

Long enough to send the chills up my spine.
I remember some of the falls I took.  Anyone remember the speed contests at Signal Hill? I thought I was fast, but then I drove down South to prove it.  I wasn't as fast as I thought.  Those So-Cal boys were fast, and they had the equipment.  At least what was tops in 1975. I used an oak board I made in woodshop.

Dogtown boys.  One of your brahs lives here in North FL.  He's got one leg now and rides a trike.  Still hard core.

I used to ride my mountain bike on a similar-looking highway in Montana, and my top speed was 47 mph downhill, limited by knobby tires and chickening out and braking on turns.   He looks like he's going much faster, but if you look at the center of the screen instead of the edges, and account for the fear factor, maybe 45 or 50 could be about right.  But what he's doing seems equivalent to doing about 150 on a bike, in regard to guts and skill.  I keep being amazed by the skill of the riders and great camera work of these skate and bike videos.

Dunno, he's not properly equipped in terms of dress, and he looks like he has at least a 50 50 chance of winding up in a wheelchair or dead, just a matter of time. Losing skin on the road is the least of his worries.

Spend some time in an ER, and you see the losers of the extreme risk sports, who go from short term hero to long term social burden.

I guess having a fear factor is a shielding device for survival. I know that life is not without risk, and being out on the ocean has its share, but embracing completely insane risk for such short term reward is a bit out there to me.

If you somehow missed the skateboard era, and as an oldie, are looking for the same thrills now, you could always do it sitting down....
