I understand the frustration with newbies that don't get etiquette. I've gotten tired of telling folks they might want to head away from the crowd. But it's ALL kinds of surfers that are clueless, nobody has a monopoly on stupid.  I'm probably a bit overly sensitive to this because of the SUP doesn't heal all wounds tagline BS. Stupid I know but it struck a nerve.....the one that was irradiated and then cut out along with a bunch of other shit from my head.

Couldn't have said it better about Dave. And the shop is pure surfer porn.

Why do you guys care so much? Surfer hates sups. Stop the presses.

I was talking to Mickey Munoz about this kind of shit last weekend at the BOP. Mickey sez "none of those guys were around when we were fighting to save surf spots and access. They get to surf today because of what guys who can no longer do a push-up on a surfboard did for all of us.  Everything important on a surfboard happens after you stand up. Guys who don't get that aren't worth my time to talk to."  I'm getting that printed on a shirt. I might have it tattooed on my forehead.

I might have it tattooed on my forehead.

I would have it tattooed on my manhood, but only the first quotation mark would fit. It's a bitch getting old.

Pono I care because I wanted to like Ralph, share his groove and love for surfing and the Seacoast.  Read his often good stores, check out his pictures and he has been a good resource for finding out about ocean minded events. That is out the window now after reading about how maybe SUP's should be policed by physical confrontation like the old days. I quote "And back in the day at 10th Street we would enforce that unwritten code of honor and backed it up with action." Awesome. So right no big deal, moving on. The guy is a respected community member and deservedly so I just don't dig on negative vibes, they are sometimes contagious so I am putting on my positivity infused rainbow, mermaid suit and going into quarantine.

I care because the last thing I want is confrontation....you know how that ends up.....and Ralph's words encourage it. I don't play well with bullies.

It probably belongs in the "How small is too small?" thread, anyway.

Marta.... the way that the "code" was/is enforced, takes many directions.... reasonable people use conversation and peer pressure. Physical confrontation is a heinously inappropriate solution, employed by bullies and neanderthals.

            ---------------interlude-----------

Having said that ^^^^... I would greatly enjoy watching stoneaxe dismember one a few of those bullies ;D ;D ;D ;D

-------------- back to my regularly scheduled reply-----------------

2 days ago, I served a 10 second reprimand to a fellow SUP'r..... I was NOT the offended party... the guy who had gotten hit by a board, was slightly injured and limping to the parking lot. He said "You know him better than I do, will you say something to him?".....I did.

I paddled up next to the offender when no one was near and quietly told him exactly what he did and that he need to become MUCH more aware and respectful. He began to defend his "unavoidable" predicament. I simply "cold shouldered" him and paddled away.... he let out a depressed "sigh"... he had just been admonished, and he knew it.

Admonition (or "being admonished") is a punishment under Scots law when an offender has been found guilty, but is neither imprisoned nor fined, but receives verbal discipline and is afterwards set free; the conviction is still recorded. ;D

I got a call the next morning, from a now, very contrite culprit, wanting to know exactly what he should have done differently. He expressed great remorse and a true desire to understand what he had done wrong.

In a stoke of pure luck, the incident was fully recorded in pictures, during my pre-surf photo session ;D
I got to go over his options and mistakes, in a frame by frame pictorial. We had a very congenial and informative conversation, in the end, he fully understood what he did, and what he should have done.

He SUP surfs well enough, but he saw that his lack of surfing experience led him to grossly underestimate the situation and make some very bad decisions.
He felt so pooly that he was going to go in to a self imposed "exile" and surf alone, down the beach.

I said "No..... that isn't how it works. You take what you learned during this event, and apply it from now on. Respect the rider...awareness, anticipation, and avoidance.

THIS is how line-up "enforcement" should take place. It is in harmony with the goal of maintaining a productive standard of behavior.

I had several emails back and forth with Ralph.  The whole thing is new to me, since there is no hate associated with flatwater paddling in the NW.  I don't think he's a bad guy at heart.  I might think differently if I surfed, and this stuff was actually relevant to me.  His personal comments were less aggressive than his blog comments.  I can understand some of his frustration, although I also don't think he's seeing the whole picture accurately, or necessarily wants to.  I don't see him ever losing his anti-SUP stance (which he tried to move towards "anti-kook" and "anti-SUP-in-the-lineup" vs. wholesale anti-SUP).  I could probably get along with him fine outside of this issue.  If I surfed in his area, I wouldn't like him based on his blog comments.

The good thing....I surfed for 5 hours on Saturday a mix of longboarders and shortboarders mostly...maybe 50 or 60...probably a dozen SUPs in site and 2 surf kayaks. Nantaskets a long beach and it was breaking well in probably 6 spots within view. Everybody was getting thier share. I was surfing in between the shortboarders and the better longboarders in all the wind on my 9'er...late drops were the order of the day but as long as you can surf and share there's no issues. I'm sure there were some thinking I was kooking out when I pulled the 14 off the racks and started surfing it but everyone simply gets along. Of course its not a critical spot with single point takeoff so its not as pressured. In spots like that you simply take your turn like everyone else.

It really is all about how you ride not what you ride and anyone that feels like they should be able to restrict where I ride......I don't have much interest in their opinion except for how it might effect me.
