First post, loving SUP. Am I going too small?
« on: September 30, 2014, 11:39:40 PM »
Hey guys how's it going I'm new to the forums here but share a love with the sport!

I have a Naish Odysseus 9'8" that I use to cruise around the bays here in Hawaii, relax, snorkel etc.  Good all-around short cruiser (transportation) that suits my lazy day needs.

I went to look at a C4 turbo spud 8'4"x28.85x4 and 125L.  I am 5'9 170~.  Used and in perfect condition so that is what peaked my interest, wanted to take it out to some small waves and cruise around.

Do you think this is going to be too unstable to paddle out on, or if the waves die to do a little bit of exploring.  I have my sea legs, paddling, prone surf and sailing.

Thanks!

Welcome!  That's not too small.  I'm 6'1" 170 and started with a 9'0"x29" x 125L, then went to a 8'5"x28 x 115L.  I am looking for a smaller board, just the other day tried a 8'3"x 27" x 100L.  I found the learning curve to go pretty quick.  At first it might feel tippy but then you get used to it and you will it will feel stable, that is as long as you have normal balance.  Good luck
Me:  6'1" x 180
Board(S): Axis foils: HPS 980, BSC 740, 810, ART 899, 999
Jimmy Lewis Wing Board 4’10” x 23 x 71L
Rawson 7’8” x 26”
Jimmy Lewis Stun Gun 8'2" x 28.3/4 x 99L
Naish Hokua 8'5" x 28 x 115L

28.85 is a tad narrow but at your height/weight it'll be a quick learn. I would do it! I'm 6'0"/180lbs and am on an 8'0"x30-1/2"x4-1/2" at 127 ltrs. It was a perfect fit and I'm used to it after riding it all summer. This board will rock this board til it wrecks! gl w/your sup adventures, kona!

One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Also, I am on Oahu and you could try my boards if you wanted to.  It also depends on what you want to do.  If you are more into cruising and less surfing then a bigger board is better.  I am focused mainly on surfing I tend try to go smaller.  If you are in a hurry you could always go to a local shop and rent a similar size board.

I would go for it too, since its a used board, your downside is very limited.  In a couple months you'll probably consider going even smaller.

Hey Surfercook, was the entire beach perspective shot using your SoloShot and Hero?

Hey guys thanks for the quick responses!  Just got back from work and paddling my naish a bit around the bay, pretty windy but nice all-around.

Yeah I think that I might rent one first, but the price is right on that C4.  Are they good boards btw?  My balance is good, the odysseus feels like i could do kartwheels on it though

eeck, I am on the big island but head over to Oahu every couple weeks for work maybe we can go for a paddle!

Cheers!
