He looks so relaxed in that second set. Heavy waves.

The guy in the first few, on the ski, is my pal Victor.  He was out there keeping a close eye on the kid because as good as Kai is, unknown curve balls await on the face that can toss you pretty good.  Victor was the one that rescued him when he sliced his toe and got him to Don Shear for the heli pickup.  Important to remember that these guys aren't out there on their own and what looks like glassy conditions is really a mine field of big moguls.

A team operation in the land of serious business.

Well said. Even for the best mother nature can sometimes dish out a blow that is a little more than anticipated.

Sad news unfolded yesterday for the ski mountaineering community, losing two of the very best and a raising star. All role models of careful planning and seamless teamwork in "the land of serious business".

Impact vest and an inflatable rescue  vest--and it's not enough, Kai almost drowned there. Swallowed water and couldn't get to the surface. Had to pull his vest and even then it was a sketchy deal. The kid has nerve.

We were watching on the cliff last year during Kai's Heli rescue.  It was intense.  Communcation was slow and lots of speculation going on.  It wasn't an epic day, but it was still huge.

I followed a few guys heading down the trail to the beach launch to watch that.  For anyone who has not been there, the beach launch is almost as crazy as the waves.  There isn't a beach, as it is all boulders.  Combine that with the waves constantly hitting the "beach" and some boards don't make it off the beach in one piece. Watched one guy get hammered back onto the boulders.  Didn't stick around to see anyone coming in, but I suspect that is just as dangerous.

That wave is just magnificent!!!!!

Kai Lenny sup surfed it like true Hawaiian Royalty.  Those photos remind of how "Eddie Aikau" might look if he sup surfed Jaws.  Outstanding!

Thanks for sharing.

Funny to read the comments from the Surfer mag forum on these same shots. Some idiot keyboard surfers were calling him a kook for using a paddle. Those in the know had to correct the tragically uninformed.

And here is Kai Lenny getting tubed at Jaws.  ;D

I was reading an interview with Laird Hamilton and he was saying that he thinks the greatest potential for sups is being able to paddle into huge waves.
