Wavestorm for BOP
« on: September 29, 2014, 07:20:35 AM »
A buddy and I are thinking about doing the Battle of the Paddle open race on Costco Wavestorm Paddleboards. We have been training on them all summer and the time has come to decide if we should do it. Has anyone ever seen anyone else on a Wavestorm at BOP? Are we completely nuts for thinking about this? Buying new boards before BOP is not feasible so it's Wavestorm or nothing. Any thoughts?

Sounds like fun. The last time I did the open race, I surfed a few waves before deciding to finish.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Do it!!

Even if I had a nice carbon race board, I would use the wavestorm or an inflatable for the open race at Salt Creek.  Just go out there and have fun.

Cheers, Jill

I think they should have a wavestorm class.

If Jamie O'Brien can surf an 8' Wavestorm at Pipeline, then why NOT take a Wavestorm SUP to BOP?

At least if you buckle a board in the Salt Creek beach break, you can return it and get a full refund!  What other retailer of SUPs will give you THAT privilege?

Make a video of the experience, post it to Youtube, then get Costco to sponsor you.  Think of how many people you'll be motivating to get fit and come into the sport!

As they get better, many will eventually want to buy higher end boards; everyone wins.

Love the concept.

They should probably make a home-made wood class race too. That would be such a showcase for all those that took a Chris Craft level craftstmanship to the sport's equipment.  You would only be able to paddle your own creation.  Like a Woody show on the water.

Neat idea....that alone could be the genesis for an entirely separate event....

When (not if) you break it at least you can take it back.  If you want to borrow a high quality US built inflatable check with ULI via their FB page.

I'm sure you will not be the only one on a Wavestorm.  You'll probably have an advantage in the surfboard class, as the Wavestorm floats like it's >200L so it will plane a little better than a lower volume board that is half under water.  Also you won't have to worry about smashing it up in the carnage.  Just put a on fin that tracks well and have fun!

I don't think it will matter much!

Have fun. I love paddling out on my wavestorm (non-sup). I even bought a Sushi too!
195lbs and it surfs great.  (relatively speaking of course)

I almost grabbed one at Costco in Dana point yesterday  my 12' 2" is just too unstable in the wind and backwash I experienced at salt creek. I saw them right near the entrance and thought why not.  Fortunately sic lent me an 11'11". Which has the Ku Nalu rocker bit its wider and thicker. Great for salt creek. Gonna be fun.

Sounds like a great idea to me. We need a full contact Wavestorm race.....I might even be able to podium if we all had to paddle with boxing gloves on.

I love slatch's idea of a woody event too. Might even get me back into the shop to dust off my tools.
