Interesting silence about the board that's ripping OZ?!
« on: September 23, 2014, 12:33:21 PM »
I know you guys are watching this.  Rick's (Creek) gotta to be going nuts...

From what I gather Paul Chapman (Casso) is a civilian ..not a paid hand/tour rider..  "Chucking Buckets" of spray like one commenter said in their forum.

So... hows come nobody is making these here?

That's a Tomo shape, there's a guy surfing our local break on one of those so they can't be that rare...

Casso is actually Andrew Cassidy...he used to be on the zone a lot until he started Australian Paddle Surfer Magazine. Looks like he has a review of that board on the site. Board specs.... 7'2" x 26 7/8" x 3 15/16" x 92L...yikes!

I've seen a couple similar boards here.

Here he is on a friggin 3 MINUTE!!! wave back in 2011.... 8)

While bunch of "Tomo" style boards in San Diego - Dave Craig has been pumping them out for Mitch (Mitch's Surf Shop).  I haven't tried one yet because only the little guys have bought any where I surf...

Noah Yap was on a tomo at the US SUP Tour event 2 weekends ago.  He surfs it well.  He would probably surf a piece of plywood well too, though.

Ha ha wetstuff... yeah, I've been watching Andrew rip on that board for quite a while.... his Minnions thread on the "Breeze" is one of the most popular and long lasting.

Andrew rips on ANYTHING. He clearly is super stoked about the "DEEP" boards and is drawing some great lines in this video.

It seems to strike a nerve with certain surfers.... much like the Simmons style SUPs do. I am interested to try anything new, and certainly would, if one was around. SUP has really pushed the envelope this year, and I am stoked about all the directions it is going.

I am fairly certain that there are considerations with a board so squared off, but when you think about it.... watch a few videos... the nose of any board is hardly ever in the water, so why not just lop it off? It would fit in the car better  ;D

I made one for myself and am really enjoying it.  Stable, fast, loose and skatey...4 adjectives I like for SUS.  I think they do allow you to go shorter and narrower than you normally might.  I'm not anywhere near the very best surfer and find I have to surf it differently than what I have usually ridden....but trying/learning new and different is good, in my opinion.  Pretty much all the cool moves I've done have been accidental...but damn they were fun!  And hey, I'm cool with accidental badass moves.   My surf is almost always choppy, so for this old dog to be thinking he can now go sub 27", well I'm definitely ok with that. My recommendation is if you have the chance, try one.  I think you might be pleasantly surprised.

Highs:
- Super fast
- Planes through dead sections beautifully
- Holds a rail all the way through big carving turns
- Floats over turbulent foam nicely
- So light and easy to throw around
- Super strong construction
- Very stable for its width
- Paddles ok for its length
- Works great in tiny or large waves

Lows:
- Can take a few waves to feel out its nuances if you're used to a traditional shape
- Too short for my toes to push off the tail when jumping to my feet from a prone paddling position (makes that process slightly awkward)
- Scary looking tail that has potential to do some damage to one's head during a legrope fling-back
- Too popular (everyone wants a go so it reduces my time on it)
- Too interesting (everybody wants to stop me to have a chat about it).

How is it different from the Simmons Sups?
- from the video (and the review quote above) it looks like it carves/holds a rail much better and is less skatey.
Also I guess it is narrower.
Must be other differences.

having a Simmons shape board, this is nothing like it. at 95 kgs, there is no way i'd could go narrower than 30" on a standard Simmons board...not that I've seen many Simmons boards that narrow.  these boards are in the 27"-29" wide range, and a good foot shorter than a relatively short Simmons style board.  I don't know how these guys ride these things unless they're all super human...or DEEP (the Minion manufacturer) is really onto something here with the design.  I'd sure be interested in trying one and hopefully some manufacturer here in the states will 'get on it'.

They are starting to show up here on Maui, I have made a few. They surf really well, the design lets you go shorter and narrower than you thought was possible. Some people have a hard time wrapping their heads around the funny shape. I think the board can surf better than I can, great recovery capabilities.

I have a very hard time with shapes that don't visually flow on a wave. I just can't get my head around square noses or those Picklefork boards. I think because everything in the ocean and especially in the surf is curved the squareness just doesn't fit aesthetically and ruins the visual flow. Just my opinion.
