Weight of fanatic all wave 9'1?
« on: September 22, 2014, 06:57:25 PM »
Hi I am looking at the 9'1 all wave versus the naish mana 9'5 and starboard widepoint/ hero? However I cannot find the weight of the allwave. Weight matters quite a bit to me since I carry the board 10 blocks to the beach. Weigh in on the pros and cons as we'll for a 200 pound plus paddle surfer trying to take it to the next level for surfing mostly mushy waves but occasional head high sets like today in south florida. Are 2015 fanatic allwaves the same shape as 2014? Would a hero asap construction be viable as well as a surfing sup???

RB, I respect all styles.

RB,  I can only help with a weight: my 2013, 9-2 AW HRS is 27lbs. on my postal scale.  It seems much better suited to my 180-90lbs than the 9-6 AW I had before; less corky.  It has a vertical wall handle which would make it miserable to carry such a long distance.  I only walk a block (thru parking lot and sand) but have a cart. "It's not the walk to the water, it's the walk back." ...and sometimes carry the Nalu, chair and cooler.

I noticed the SB Hero because it is even more wide than the AW and I am clumsy, but there's none locally near me.  The one I am lusting for at the moment is production version of the Infinity Phoenix.  It seems a helluva value but I'd rather have more than two fin boxes.  The other is the new 8-5 AW.  My water goes cold soon so Jim K would not have one in time for this season, but it looks perfect.  It seems counterintuitive, but a German shaper and a poleboard manufacturing company make a helluva package.

i had the AW 8'10" and still own a Hero. Am 210 lbs. Haven't tried the 9'1" AW nor any Naish. To me, the Hero was a better board than the AW. Much more stable, and it should be at 33" wide.  I fell off the 8'10" so much that I eventually sold it.  My balance is no doubt not as good as many on this forum, so i prefer more stable boards. But I think the Hero surfs as well as the AW did...you just have to step back on the narrower tail once you're riding the wave.   I surf Cape Cod in summer, South Florida rest of year.  But I also own an 8'6" Simmons style custom, and i gotta say, that is my go-to board most of the time.  You really may want to consider one of those.  I think when it is cleaner/bigger the AW will shine, but for FL's mostly choppy and generally not huge conditions, you cannot go wrong with the Simmons shape on 95% of the surfable days.

whoops, forgot about weight. i found the AWs fairly light, same as the Hero. My Simmons weighs more than both.

Thanks a lot for the information.  I have been thinking about the hero.  The old Naish Manas 9'5 was pretty light but much less stable than the newer ones. My SB Whopper is actually pretty light around 25-26 pounds given its girth but when the wind picks up wide boards are like masts and tough to carry.  The ASAP heros are quite cheap but not sure how much the surfing is compromised by the soft rails.

Respectfully,

Im 215 or so more with winter gear and the 9'5 is suuuuper stable @170l.

I use it only in real washing machine conditions here in NJ and still feel i could go a bit smaller.

In glass I'm on a 130l Pocket Rocket.

During my summer rental i walked it 6 blocks both ways and its average weight for its size.  walk back generally had an arm switch and a stop or two.

Hey RunningBull,

I was just down in south Florida trying to look around at surf styles and it did not seem like there were a lot around. If you can make it up to central Fl there are a few shops that have pretty good selection of surf style boards.  Paddleboard house and Epic water sports are 2 in the Cocoa/Melbourne area and there you also have the Cannibal shapes and Stu Sharpe shapes to look at.

I was lucky enough to handle some of the latest Stu Sharpe boards with the corevac laminations and they were quite light. They are the latest on this thread.

Hey Running Bull.... all the 2015 Allwaves are available in Carbon. And they are sweet looking. 8'11, 9'1, 9'5 & 9'10 are the same shape as last year, but there are completely new Allwave shapes this year in 7'10, 8'3 & 8'5.... I just ordered the 8'5 x 32 at 135 liters in Carbon (LTD) from JimK at Extreme Windsurfing. He always has a fantastic discount for any Zoner. If you want light, with a great handle for those long walks.... you might want to consider the 9'1 LTD in carbon.

I should get mine in about a month... I'll let you know the weight etc......

Standard 2013 8'10 Allwave = 22.4 lbs
2014 9'5 Mana GS = 28.2 lbs (above stated 25.4 lbs)

Here are some shots of the 2015 Allwave 9'1 LTD carbon... pretty slick look... I can't wait for my all new 8'5. I am currently on strict Primal behavior... I want to shed a few lbs before delivery  ;D ;D

Yeah the carbon fiber boards look sweet. I always wanted a carbon sb widepoint 9'5 but assumed that paying 2400 or so for something that can get dinged up doesn't make sense. The shapes are changing so fast. Naish gt are a tweener light and expensive but not as light or expensive as a a carbon board. I assume the ltd  fanatic variants are carbon boards.

Thx for suggestion

A Full Carbon Hammer is 1800 bucks and it you can Hang Ten on it all day.
1700 if you buy the Us custom version.
And if you get it with the quad plus one setup you only have to buy a center fin
to cover the thruster option.

If light is what you are looking for, you might also want to consider a custom.  For even more lightness--vacuum bagged with vector net.
