Time for a shorter board
« on: September 22, 2014, 01:42:38 PM »
Currently surfing a Fanatic All Wave 9'6" x 32" Current weight 185 lbs.

I feel really confidant on the board I'm on now but would like something a lot more maneuverable.   How hard is it to go from what I'm on now to sub 9' x 29"?  Would that a huge noticeable difference?

I bounce back n forth between Oceanside and Huntington anyone know of any demos coming up?

I have an AllWave 8'10" and an 8'3" custom board and you are welcome to try one or both of them.  I surf dawn patrol almost every day, usually south of Huntington Pier somewhere, depending on conditions.   You might really like the smaller AllWave.  I'm wanting one of Ralph's Phoenix boards so I might consider selling the AllWave.

Sounds good.  I'm in. I'm a teacher and have to be at school by 8AM, so I'm dawn patrol only unless it's the weekend.

Welcome to try my SIMSUP ST (8'4x31x4.5 136L) but you'd have to meet me during the week at La Jolla Shores...

If none of those work out for you, you're also more than welcome to try any of my 9' or less boards listed below in my signature.

I'm at SanO, sometimes SC pier, and sometimes parts south....most any day of the week.

Just lemme know....

Oh, and to answer your question....you'll feel the less width, more than the less length, if you're going below 30" on the new board.  If not, than no....dropping just 6" in length should be fairly easily done after a few sessions.

I started out on a Allwave 9'6" and I weigh 220 the 9'6" is 175 liter
I have a Hammer 9'5" now at 160 liters deck is not underwater at all.
I would got up to Santa Barbara and demo an 8'11" hammer at your weight
it would still be a floater.

You shouldn't have much of a problem going down to around 125 liters. There are many many boards that fit this range. My go-to surf-sup is the Exocet Fish 8'11x30" at 125 liters. Very stable and very surfy...  Paddle on,  JD

Dropping down the an 8'10 Allwave will not be that difficult for you, my guess is if Zooport does sell it, you will want to buy it after trying it !!

I dropped from a 9'6" by 29 to a 7'8" by 31".  The smaller board is more stable in chop.  You will lose a lot of glide but the performance side is sooooo much better.
