We had some great wind on this paddle, the problem was that it wasn't in the right direction. Counter to the forecast, the wind shifted offshore soon after we launched. The best glides happened early on when the wind was sort of in the right direction. Still had a great time. It was blowing 25-30mph with consistent gusts to 35-38mph. The bumps were nicely groomed since it was partially offshore.

By the way, you can add speed and GPS data from any GPX or FIT file to your video by using the free Garmin VIRB Edit software (you don't need a Garmin camera to use it - works fine with GoPro or other footage). It's a bit of a pain to sync the GPS data with the video files, but certainly doable with a bit of messing around.

If you also want to see some nice photos of the downwind run, you can check out my blog entry:

 8) very cool Argosi,  good work on the video, looks like you had a great time.  Got some good glides too... 17km/h....

Hope the Lake stays open for you a bit longer this year.  Thanks for taking the time to share.

Cheers!
It ain't over until the fat board sinks....

Cool, I like the GPS data overlay, I'll have to learn how to do that.

Great vid and good sounds! I'm glad to see someone else whose heart rate is similar to mine downwinding. If you go for a run it will probably average out at 135bpm. Not downwinding. Oh no. We're talking average 165bpm. Is that good or bad? I'm not sure, but it is sure as hell more fun than running.

Speeds on this run were maxing at 17kph, which is pretty good for around here. Sometimes glides can reach 18-19kph after railroading a few bumps, but only when the bumps get bigger. On this day, because of the semi-offshore wind, we had smaller more consistent bumps which made for higher average speed but lower peak speeds.

Hopefully the season will stretch to Christmas. Let me know any time you want to make the drive to downwind here.

Yeah, we didn't make to the intended take-out point due to the increasingly offshore winds - we could've made it if we knee paddled the rest of the way, but it was easier to just take a cab.

Cool, I like the GPS data overlay, I'll have to learn how to do that.

It's fun to know how fast you're going on the video. The free Garmin VIRB Edit software allows you to add GPS and heart rate data onto video footage from a GoPro or almost any other camera. If you use Garmin Connect, just export the GPS file (as a FIT or GPX file) and save it to your computer, then use VIRB Edit to import the video file and the GPS file and combine them.

It's really easy to combine a single video file and a single GPS file. If you have multiple video files for just one GPS file, then it gets trickier. PM me if you need tips for multiple video files.

VIRB Edit also has basic video editing capabilities so you can cut, splice, add music, etc.

The thing I like about my camera is that the mic is not sensitive enough to pick up much wind noise but it picks up the slapping of the water on the bottom of the board when you're on a glide - perfect!

As for heart rates while downwinding, the amazing thing is that I had no idea I was working so hard - I'm just having too much fun to notice. That's definitely not the case for any other form of exercise I might do. I was racing a friend downwind on the weekend and my heart rate hit 180. That's pretty high when my supposed max heart rate is 170 according to the most commonly used formula.
