Deck Pad & Tail Pad for a SIMSUP?
« on: September 16, 2014, 11:24:03 AM »
Zoners,

Wondering if any of you have a deck pad that you would recommend for a SIMSUP.  It looks like Kirk has a standard ribbed one that he tends to put on, but wondering if there are any other options out there that I should know about (ie super comfortable, grippy enough, light weight, etc).

I'm also going to add a tail pad.  I like having the back ridge for my back foot to find the tail placement.  Any recommendations there?  A small thing, I know, but if there is some gem out there that stands out above the rest, I'd love to hear about it.

Here's the standard one (which I'll go with unless someone turns me on to something else exudes awesomeness):

Another user suggested the Von Sol Big Square Pad to me but I have been unable to confirm the dimensions with VS.  I inquired on their FB page and the corporate website, no response.  With 3 pieces it looks like it would fit a wide tail SIMSUP nicely with 1/2"-1" space between each piece.

I ended up purchasing the PUNT SURF Big Deal Traction Pad (20" x 16").  I have not installed it yet but it is big enough to replace the entire rear section of my current 2 piece pad.

Ah ya, I just found AJR's installation of the Von Sol Fish.

I remember some guys on here had some issues with their feet and really paid attention to finding a comfortable deck pad.  I'll keep digging through the posts to see if I can find those comments too (if I find them, I'll post a link to them in this thread).

Personally I find Hydroturf more comfortable and plenty grippy but it absorbs some water. Seadek (aka Xtrak) is even grippier and absorbs less water but it's too thin - it isn't long before my feet are killing me (I've got arthritis). The new FCS pad and OAM also get good reviews.

Try calling Surf Ride in Solana Beach - they had one in stick when I picked my fish pad up...

I am not 100% happy with the PUNT SURF Big Deal Traction Pad I purchased, it is a little too tapered for the profile of my Phoenix.   I ordered the Von Sol Big Square Tail Pad this morning.  The VS Big Square is 12" wide at the back (14" wide at the front) so it should be a better fit for my Phoenix's tail.

I'll update once received.

The stock Hydroturf pads that Kirk sells with the SIMSUPs are really great, I have not found any issues with comfort or grip.  Durability is excellent as well. If you want a tail paid, he can probably work with you on that, or ship the board with the deck pad not installed so you can cut it to fit around the tail paid of your liking.

Thanks guys.  Sounds like the stock pads are a good way to go.

I got a solid month of surf on my 8-0 ST and no complaints with the stock deck pad. I added the Von Sol fish tail pad same as AJR and love it.T

As mentioned above I wasn't 100% satisfied with the Punt Surf pad.  It's shape did not fit the profile of my Phoenix very well.  All I wanted was a kick so I would know when my foot was past the sweet spot so I decided to install just the rear 6 inches of pad.  The start of the kick is lined up with the back of my rear fin boxes.

This type of setup would work well for the ST, one side of the kick for each side of the split tail.
