Careless $&#%€!!!
« on: September 08, 2014, 04:56:40 PM »
A few days ago I went to a race and afterward a couple of us paddlers were talking about the race and the boards. Some of them wanted to try my board. Since I like to promote the sport, like to try other people's boards and enjoy hearing other opinions about my board I had a couple of them try my Allstar. Yesterday I look at my board and see marks and scratches all the way from the front of the board till two feet behind the standing area. One of the guys who tried my board must have f$&@^%# hit it with every single paddle stroke! That just blows my mind! If I try somebody else's board I treat it better that my own and make damn sure I don't put a single scratch or ding in it because that's what I'd expect from people trying mine. I'm pretty laid back but s$&%£ like this drives me nuts. I even have helicopter tape on my board in the spots where I tend to hit it. That tape was no match for this guy. There are marks below the tape over the whole length.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(!!! Lesson learned..... Rant end!
On that note, does anyone know what coating Starboard uses on top of the paint? I'm talking about the 2014 Starboard Allstar. There seems to be a coating on top of the paint that makes the surface slightly rough and tends to come off if you even get your paddle close to it.

Is it possible that your friend is a low level paddler who does not have the skill to keep from bashing your board?  Maybe doesn't understand that you can't bang the rail with the paddle?  What does his board look like, is it beat?

If he/she is an experienced paddler, there is no excuse.

Don't let me try your board. I'm a rail whacker.  Before you try anything else scrub it with magic eraser. Dollars to donuts it makes it like new.

I agree.. you'll be amazed at how well the magic erasers work..

I've had this happen to me many times.. and often by very experianced paddlers (like Bill)..  ;D

I've got a couple of the carbon 2014 starboards, and mine are way worse than that. A stiff breeze will make those marks, and you're right there is a coating / clear coat. I'm pretty sure its more like an automotive clear coat than the acrylic rattle can stuff. The clear coat is "flat", not matte or satin, and the flattening agent used is usually Talc. I think thats why it turns so visibly

The best thing to touch it up with is the krylon "flat" clear, it blends really well. You can buff the scratches out with some super duty compound, but it will lose that flat appearance.
