Alrighty Then...

I chose the Seafoam Green (Avocardo) Phoenix 8'0"
For the first test ride.

Overhead, A little rolly, but down the line..to the inside crack in the shallows..

Board is Very Stable.
Was concerned about the wide butt but that was soon dispelled.
The Rails are Super Fine...the transition from deck to rail starts about 5" in.
That leaves a 20" flat part of the deck, my toes just hug the transition curve.
Comfortable. but maybe some spray traction on part of the rails and nose?

To me it felt a tad stiff, but that will translate into stability for others.

Big carves..

Tried some more aggressive off the tops to re-entry but just couldn't get the pivot..
and whip speed I needed to pull those off.  Fins too Big? Need a back rake to the fins?

Holds a high line if you want it..

So reserve judgment at this time until Larry sends me the additional inserts and fins to try.
He swears that I will get much improved performance..

The Phoenix has Half Moon (Allison's) with the Pro-Box System..(Allison Design)
There is an Insert that you can remove and put another one in with a different angle.

So Larry promised to ship them to me tomorrow....
4 Degree and 8 Degree Inserts as well as some other fin profiles for testing..
Interesting, you can have a 4 Degree Frontside and 8 Degree Backside Fin..
Asym's are cool...

Bear in mind I have been riding L41's and The TimSup..
These 2 whip off the top and re-enter gaining speed...

Construction is pretty darned good.
In fact I broke a paddle today but nothing happened to the Phoenix.
I got a few poundings on the inside dump..

More on this later...

I'm interested to see how what fin changes you make and how you like them.

Back foot placement is critical for snappy turns especially with the wider tail.  Having a tail kick would help a lot in this regard for me.  Sometimes my back foot is just not far enough back to the corner and my cutbacks suffer.  Do you have a tail kick that can be installed in the space behind the existing pad or an extra wide tail pad with kick that would be appropriate for the wide tail?

I do not run a tail kick on the L41.
The TimSup does have one.
For what I was describing it is not a tail kick issue.

For sure I will get this Board Dialed in..

Already is a Winner just needs some refinement for my liking.

We'll see what Larry comes up with...

Saw one at Dpatch the other day, and those keels just seem way to big, and too far back to let the tail "whip" anywhere.

I surf with a couple guys who run Phoenix customs with quad boxes set much further forward....who have abandoned the keels, and gone to much smaller quads.

One guy actually dropped a fifth center box in, and tossed in a nubber to help keep the tail from breaking loose on bigger days, and harder bottom turns.

Don't know how much you can actually experiment with the board (or want to), but that's just a little FYI.
Me: 6'1"/185...(2) 5'1" Kings Foil/Wing Boards...7'10 Kings DW Board...9'6" Bob Pearson "Laird Noserider"...14' Lahui Kai "Manta"...8'0" WaveStorm if/when the proning urges still hit.

FWIW, after a year and a half, the keels still do it for me.  As far as a tail-kick goes, I like to keep my Phoenix simple.  This really just comes down to rider preference.

Thanks for the write up.  Can't wait to hear how the board rides when Larry gets you the other inserts to get it dialed in.

Same here, I like the keels but probably don't have enough experience to know any better.   I don't have any problems cranking some nice cutbacks as long as my back foot is in the right spot.  I am going to add a tail kick to help dial this in.

I am interested to see what fin set up Ralph ends up preferring. I might give it a try.

I run a kick pad on my L41 so I know where I'm at - it's pricy but I like the Von Sol brand. This one looks right for the Phoenix.

Here is an Update..

I decided to go to Larry's.

Better to go to the source.

I came back with Inserts that are 4, 6, 8 Degree

A couple Fin Options with a Promise of a couple more.

First Off I put in the 8 Degree Inserts.

Significant increase in Speed and with the Speed more looseness (maneuverability)

These Phoenix's really rail nicely..

Then I put in the Raked Fins..
Much looser but almost too much because the pivot point is too far back..IMO
Less control off the top-re-entry.

Then I tried the Red Parabolics..8 Degree..both Fins..
Pretty good but I needed just a little more grab.
Readjust the front to 4 Degree, back still at 8 Degree.
More Better... Probably as good as it gets...for this Fin Set.
Dropping into steep pockets into the shore pound...Holds well..making these...

Interested in seeing if the GT works best..the pivot point is similar to the Parabolics...but with a rake..

im admittedly biased since i got a custom V3 two years ago its the only board i ride now.
Have the 4 box Pro Box system-i usually go quad because surfing at Patch mostly means i need speed to get around morons and crumbling sections.
Super fast board-turns great but get your foot near the rear cuz the wide tail takes a little oomph to really make the fins and rails bite.
Just a great design.

pic of the LA fins and GT set up i use for quad.
Pretty raked and hold suprisingly well on beefy bottom turns-great release for quads-all other quads i have tried are just too big for my preference.

Tried an 8-0 Phoenix last week. Impression was fins too big and too far back. Winged tail and the quad setup and the board would be awesome. I think they have a model like that.
Boards:

8-10 x 31 Egg
8-11 X 32 Double wing Fangtail Tom Whitaker
8-6 X 30 1\2  Inbetweener Tom Whitaker
8-4 x 30 Hyper quad Tom Whitaker (wife's now)
8-4 X 31 1\4.  Round (wide) Diamond Tail Quad Tom Whitaker
9-4 X 30 1\2. Swallow Stinger Quad Tom Whitaker (ex wifes now)
10-0 Brusurf for teach

I am going to try some of those 8 degree inserts if you say it makes the board faster, maybe with a set of those red parabolics.  My board is already very fast but faster would be great for the smaller slower waves I typically ride.  I am looking forward to more fin feedback.

I swapped boards with a friend last weekend and his board was painfully slow compared to my Phoenix V2.
