I Love Good Tools
« on: September 06, 2014, 08:06:27 AM »
A new bead roller. A very versatile tool for working metal.

Took me about four hours to assemble and tune it up. Big problem with buying tools on the web--they pretty much come as a kit.

Next step--the all-aluminum SUP board. I say that as a joke, but I get a little twitch when I think of it. The first project is reworking Nero, my airstream toyhauler. The aluminum cabinets I built look like crap. Rather then replace them I plan to rework them. At least that's the plan, though I wouldn't be surprised to find myself driving to Portland for a bunch of sheet aluminum.

A little test piece. I also bought some hole punch/flare dies. Mittler Brothers is a sickness. Avoid getting their catalog--it's dangerous for your bank account.

I am envious PB.
I spent a lot of money having sheet aluminum bead rolled, when I was building my drag car.
Fabricators are not cheap.
Might be time to pick up a new tool and redo the panels and add a bit of flair.

If you're doing only aluminum and your panels are less than 4' diagonally the 24" is pretty reasonably priced and very good. You don't need the industrial motor or the 36" unless you're doing big panels and might do steel. I wanted one I could use for everything so I took the major bank hit, but the 24" small motor is $600-800. Of course you can buy a crank operated one for about a hundred bucks, but they're fiddly and not capable of the same work unless you get really good with them. I'm substituting a motor for years of experience.

BigDongSUPer rides again.... so.... stoney, it was YOU?

Bob wanted a SUP of Aluminum
but knew the thought was quite strange
He pretended to be from Birmingham
so Zoners not think him deranged

No board was produced from the thread
Zone poets appeared instead.
So now he wants to continue
blaming Bill, just like he used to.

;D  supthecreek--fine surfer and paddler, primal guru, and now master poet.

Too bad you're not British.  Then instead of having to find a rhyme with "aluminum" (pretty clever with "Birmingham" there) you'd be using "aluminium" which opens up all kinds of obvious rhymes such as ascogonium, androconium, black selenium....

Randy does great stuff. I met him at Leno's garage a million years ago. Okay, maybe twenty. Nero needs to look like the decoliner:

In my dreams.

Heres and article about what I'm up to: http://www.ponostyle.com/bending-metal/

and a picture of tortured metal

Simple solution, just spend your time distressing the outside of the airstream, then when people look inside it will have a harmonious flow to the metal work.  Like Rat Rods, you could pioneer a new style of toater homes, or in your case toaster home. Remember your not a builder you're an "automotive artist"

Made a cover to go over the bottom panel of the half door. It looks better, but I still need practice to get the lines straight.

I cheated the design a little to the left and the inset for the switchplate moves the design center left also, so it doesn't clash too badly with the door above. Good to practice in the garage, because so far I haven't done anything I consider living space-worthy. I see a lot of aluminum scrap in my future.

A metal supplier I use has a huge plate shear. It must be 15' long, and 12' tall. They sheared some 12" X 4' X 3/8" plates for me out of 4' x 10' x 3/8" steel plate. Holy Crap! That thing made this block square warehouse throw 4.0 earth quakes. It was fun to watch and feel, but I kept thinking somethings gonna give, and we are going to be impaled by something!
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.
