And this is why we take a safety boat, as in a north easterly if we miss Lantau Island there are a few Chinese Islands south west and then the next land we'd get to would be Hainan Island some 430kms / 270 miles away.

Or Macao where dirty money gets cleaned

Nobody has downwinded from HK to Macau on a SUP yet, although someone recently swam it along with a person in an OC keeping the pink dolphins at bay.

For those few who may be interested in downwinding across the Lamma Shipping Channel in Hong Kong; where to start from, what it looks like trying to figure out if the gap between ships is long enough to safely paddle through, and then how to get back, here is short video of the journey to the start, the pause in the middle and the boat trip back...

When I get a new GoPro, and figure out DJ's mounting method, I'll make a video of the actual crossing... This is the time of the year this run gets to be awesome...

Note that we ALWAYS do this with a safety boat and maximum 2 boards per boat, in case we have a DJ experience and lose paddles or boards midway...

We crossed a shipping channel on this day..

Could have been nasty..

Visability went to only a few yards/meters for a while when we had to self rescue ourselves after a sudden wind change.

Those were some gnarly conditions there DJ.. 50 knots... didn't seem you had to paddle at all in places! Great to see....and glad you made it back in one piece

We would not be able to cross our channel in those conditions... well maybe we could, but getting back would be a long roundabout trip and may mean overnighting on Lamma island.

Now I know this is not a DJ quality vid (actually is appallingly bad), but yesterday on the East Lamma Channel downwind run, I had a crazy idea. Surely I could stick my waterproof Sony Cyber-shot camera in my CamelBak waist belt and video a part of the run? I normally attach the camera with about 14" of cord to the waist tie of my shorts and then have it in my shorts pocket. So the only way to lodge it in place was to loop the camera cord through my Starboard hoodie rash guard neck tie, and then jam it vertically into the waist belt..

The result? Well for starters I only managed a few minutes of footage before the thing popped out of the waist belt and swung wildly around, and I decided it was better to stop. Of those minutes, there is virtually none showing the horizon, possibly because my gut was forcing the thing to point at my feet.. However, behold the first actual footage of an actual board downwinding the East Lamma Channel (actually way past it)... Now it really is time to get that GoPro 4..

This is a nice time-lapse of the ships that pass through the channel. The place we cross is way in the distance in this shot

Some of the CHinese tankers I saw in the Malacca Strait off Singapore were bigger than god and made 3-4' wakes that extended far from them.

HM, Most of the time these container ships are in a queue when they get to the channel and so they have to slow down, and as a result not much wake. However, in bad weather, gaps appear and then they can move a lot faster. Crossing the channel behind a container ship that is moving fast in a downwind, is a sight to be seen as the wind whips up the wake in a line of waves like a dragons tail heading upwind behind it. Crossing it is not for the faint-hearted and one of the things I hope to get on that new GoPro soon..

Winds were light (13-15knots / 25-30kph) and falling yesterday afternoon in the East Lamma Channel, but glides were to be had over the shipping channel.. This is my first attempt at capturing what it is like encountering a ship along the way...

Conditions were rather tame and the ship small, so the wake crossing was not as wild as they usually are..

Ever manage to catch up with the other wake (the one going same direction as you)?

Yes... but it entails travelling as close as possible behind the ship. As you can see here I actually stop well before the ship reaches me so it can clearly see I am stopping and not going in front of it. I then wait until it is level with me (when the video starts here) before paddling towards it; again so they know there is no chance I will somehow paddle in front of it or get in the way. By doing this it means that the downwind wake is long gone and hard to catch. Also in this case I am travelling East, directly perpendicularly across the shipping line. The wake on the other hand was travelling about 45 degrees from the ship/shipping line so if the wind direction matches the wake direction it can be one hell of a wave and ride... I'll get that on video one of these days...

This is one of the shortest routes (5.29km / 3.3 miles) across our shipping channel from Repulse Bay to Lamma Island. Conditions not perfect but a bunch of us did 3km of this downwind run stopping short of the shipping channel before our monthly time trial race today and then since the wind was increasing I couldn't resist doing another one afterwards all the way across (both with one of the race safety boats). Bit of a full on morning but had to be done ;)

that looks like a fun run. I haven't been to Hong Kong in 35 years, time to go back, maybe Singapore too, to see the F1 Grand Prix.

Look like you're got that F16 down, but it seems to be trimmed a little back. If you have another hole for your steering forward of where it is now you might want to give it a try. You can always go back if it doesn't work, but your nose looks a bit high. I never see it coming close to going under, and it should. You should have to move your back foot back and crouch to prevent it.
