new board dilemma
« on: September 03, 2014, 09:06:49 PM »
I am in the  market for a new board.   I currently ride a 10'6 c4 da beachboy or a king custom with a v bottom and and stinger tail.  So i looking to all you  for ideas.
I am nearly 61  surfed since I was 12  suped for about 2+ years now.

So here is what I am looking for stability, speed when paddling,  ( so easy to catch waves), (I have come to the conclusion  that I paddle slow)  easy to turn.

I surf mostly  reefs like terramar cardiff or tamarack. so  sometimes the wave is dead slow and sometimes pretty fast.  I tend to carve (I think) don't slash maybe glide some mostly carve.

I am thinking of either a  sup sports da hammer or  maybe a kings super simmons.  width wise very close to 32  length for stability...... maybe 9'8" length   want to be below 10' or maybe a flat out custom. I want to try a more progressive bottom   like maybe  a single concave  into a double with  some v and fairly deep concaves.

so here is my question........ What are your suggestions? what should I look at and try to demo?    Thanks for your thoughts!

If you go with a simmons type go shorter.  Demo some of Kings simmons boards.  The Kings factory is close to you.  32" wide is fine, but I think you will like it 9' or less.  There is a lot of nose and tail to help balance. Dave can design more glide into it you want.
Dave has a lot of demo boards up there, and is amazingly approachable. Great family and company.

Plus one on the Hammer, it's really a versatile board. Easy to paddle and surfs like a mo-fo.

Two truths to live by here at the zone:
Unlike your typical Taylor Swift song lyric, we Zoners still love our former rides.
You can never demo too much or eat too Primal.

Thats 'bout it.

What's your weight and height?  Lots of sup choices out there.  I'm always curious to find out what people purchase and why.  Just to confuse the issue, some people are going with a longer sup with refined enhancements like in the new Laird Surf and Hybrid models.  If you get to stand up paddle surf a lot you will want a newer shorter around nine footer and a 10 foot plus model also.  San Diego gets a lot of surf year round and a longer 10 foot plus board for the smaller clean days would be a good call.

If you are in or near San Diego, give Dave or Buck at King's a call.  Dave and Buck met me at the beach and brought enough boards to fill a full day of demo.
