Incredible footage! LOL @ 1:56 and 2:15. That drop at 4:00 was badass too.

The news coverage of that swell made it so that everyone in SoCal, surfer or not, was there.  You wouldn't believe the traffic jam to get anywhere near the wedge.  I finally turned around in my truck, went home and rode my bike down there.  You couldn't get near the place in a car, and you wouldn't have found a parking spot if you had.

One you were there, the spot looked like an anthill, with so many people on the beach, floating in the water, going for waves and dropping in on each other it was ridiculous.

Just too much humanity though to do again-great spectacle though.

Would anyone be able to describe what it would be like to be in that guy's situation?! Can't imagine it - waaaay to big for my comprehension!

Yeah, the parking locally was nonexistent....but after the 3/4 of a mile walk or more was SO worth it.

Now why Newport didn't have all those mugs sign a "You're on your own, our lifeguards are not risking their lives for your dumbass" release is beyond me.

One lard bucket just got too tired out there to swim in, and so one LG went in after him, then two, and then two more......and all four plus "hep, hep me I cont swim" dude had to eventually just take multiple beatings as they rode the rip back out to the waiting LG boat who had to stealthily maneuver in the tricky surf.

That was one rescue of many that we saw in the 90 minutes or so that we were there.

I'm all for risking your life for shits and giggles.....but don't put someone else's in peril just for your own yaw-yaws. >:(

Never been out in big wedge, but I can tell you firsthand, that even when you think you have things under control, that's one place it can all go bad really fast. And getting out of that water is not easy. The lifeguards pay attention when it's big like that, but not so much when it isn't. I've come so very close to drowning there that I get the shakes just thinking about it. I've had nothing left, like nothing, zero, nada, and still going the wrong way, when a little flip of the water pushed me to where I could stand. I nearly drowned five feet from a place I could stand up and there wasn't a thing I could do about it. And that's when I was swimming a couple of miles or more many nights, and body surfing the wedge every day I could.

Now add in getting the crap pounded out of you and some of the longest shallow water hold downs you'll ever find, and the dice bounce pretty weird. The guy you're talking about could have forty years of experience in big wedge and still get into trouble he can't handle.

Thanks for the insight - hearing your firsthand account is incredible. It must be a totally different ball game out there! Very brave indeed but must be a massive adrenaline rush??!!

I grew up between L and M st.  This place was my backyard.  I found parking at 6:30 am only because I know a couple of local's only spots.  The Wedge can be scary for the uninformed.  If you relax and don't fight it you will be fine.  People get in trouble in the water real fast when they panic.  Always remain calm, your only priority is to breath.  Let the current take you if need be jus tread water and get good air.  The Wedge will deposit you back up on the beach if you let it.  The only place you need to avoid is directly under the lip.  Swim in or out from there and relax.

:o The video was awesome! The music, however, was so bad I had to mute the clip.  Why would someone destroy such a great piece of original music?

Watching the sponger go over the falls with his fins dangling brings back fond memories. When I was a kid we would intentionally do that. Having the lip hit right on the front of my boogie board on a big hollow day brings back some of my worst memories. Like seeing sand clearly for a split second just before my face smacked the bottom. Having my neck snap back, and feeling the skin come off of my nose and chin. That never happened to me surfing or body surfing. It's all fun and games till it's not.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.
