Hobie CMLB stock 9'8 BCX version
« on: September 01, 2014, 04:58:13 PM »
Anyone have any experience with how these boards ride in the surf.

http://www.hobie.com/stand-up-paddleboards/98CMLB-11-4.aspx

This will be for the surf.  For me cruising on super small days or to take out less experienced riders on.

Thanks

We used to carry Hobies back in the day...Mark Johnson was from SB...but, 30" wide to "take out less experienced riders on"...not a good idea...unless they are petite in perfect conditions...

In our line, the standard Stoke at 9'6" x 30.5" and 150 liters is comparable...but, the Stoke Wide 9'6" x 32" or Stoke Xtra Wide at 9'6" x 33.5" is mo bettah...as would be our 9'5" x 31" or 9'5" x 33" Hammer...

I have the 9'0 version of this board & I think it's great.  I'm not a very experienced surfer, though, so I can't comment too much on specifics.  It catches waves fairly easily, goes fast down the line, has a classic longboard look and feel, and feels very maneuverable (to me).  I've surfed up to slightly overhead and had a good time, purling never an issue.  It's a "punchy" little board.  Weighs 19 lbs.

Not the most stable in very rough waters (sf bay area), but I feel like a boss paddling around when it's calm.  I imagine the 9'8 would be a little more stable.  I weigh 170, 6'2.

Hope that helps, amigo.

Also been on the 9'0"x30" model, and indeed very stable, but....

I say that with my "goto" board being 7'8"x30 @ 119ltrs, and my "longboard" being 9'0"x28x3-3/4" @ 120ltrs.....but that said, it was surprisingly agile, and a fun board to play on in the chest high surf that day.

The only thing I'd be concerned with is how "inexperienced" and how big your other riders might be, because 30" is going to be a little tough for a new learner to have as much fun as they should have on their first or second paddle.....unless you're talking about putting some early teens, and younger.

JMO, but it should be a fun board in the surf for you, and should cruise just fine, as long as you're not out there trying to race someone.
Me: 6'1"/185...(2) 5'1" Kings Foil/Wing Boards...7'10 Kings DW Board...9'6" Bob Pearson "Laird Noserider"...14' Lahui Kai "Manta"...8'0" WaveStorm if/when the proning urges still hit.

I had the pleasure of owning a CM LB 9'8" in the raw construction. Mine was 32" wide as opposed to the stock 30".

It was a fantastic board. Fast, stable, easy to paddle, and loose if you got back to the tail.

The only reason I got rid of it (trade at Cinnamon Rainbows  in NH - thanks Crop) was that I wanted a more traditional nose rider as opposed to a modern performance longboard style.

The Raw construction is no longer offered, so the new ones would be a little heavier with a corresponding increase in toughness. Great board!

My goofy avatar pic is on that board!
