Luc,

I have both units, the speed puck and the GT11 (precursor to the 31)  The GT is much smaller, about the size of a cigarette pack. Never any trouble reading it. It seems to respond less damped than the speed puck, I see the surges and lulls of my stroke more, and they are more evident when I look at the tracks.

The speed puck only has one digit, in tenths. GT unit in hundredths.  I use it on my sailboat for wind shifts now.

I just got the speed coach and it is way better than both, but way more expensive.

Thank you very much for the clarification It does look like it fits the bill for what I am looking for i.e. immediate simple feed-back of how bad I am as I try to work on my stroke, position and so on.

Cheers,

Luc

Canada :-)
Ed did you have any specific software/firmware setup done by the vendor or just plain vanilla?
I do not plan to upload anything to the Speed Sailing Web Site :-)

Cheers,

Luc

I had a look at the SpeedCoach GPS - it sure looks great but $400 is too much for my purpose.

Today we announced the Sony Smartwatch 3 with GPS and running Android Wear. Ipx 58.  The new Xperia Z3 smartphone is Ipx 68. The Smartwatch will work as gps standalone without smartphone.
That said, the GPS doesnt give the high frequency readout and accuracy needed for paddle sports. No smartphones do it. Theres one marketed in Australia that
Is specifically for paddlesports.  Adverts are on seabreeze.

I work for Sony Mobile Communications.

Well the GT-31 is a little bit more elusive in North America. The only one I have found so far is only sold as a package with waterproof pouch that I do not really need.

I'm going to build one--add it to my autopilot/radio rudder. I'm going for doppler plus high refresh. Might even do a connection to my hall-effect speedo. Available in 2020 as a kit or much sooner as plans.

I'm playing with two GPS units with Doppler. I think I can do better than .01kts accuracy. that oughta woik. Interesting paper here:

Hey Ibenac,

the importer in the US is a nice guy name Craig Bergh.  Email him and tell him you don't want the bag.  I am sure he will accommodate you.

Tell him Ed Sinofsky sent you there.

Hello Bill,
I have seen a web page from a guy in Australia that was combining two Navi GT-31 or equivalent mounted on a windsurfing helmet. He was showing that the precision was excellent.
I did not kept track of the web page sorry.
Cheers,

Luc

Hello Ed,
I ended-up ordering the package from Craig. Now I will look for some serious velcro tape I think that there was a link in one of the post in the forum.
Cheers,

Have you looked at the Garmin Virb Elite? It's a GPS with built-in GoPro with a decent display you can customize. I've got one and like it much better than the GoPro. It's on Amazon now for $279.

The great thing about this is you can read live speed, stats, HR while recording a video of your paddling session. Then when you edit the video you can overlay all the stats and GPS info on the video.

There are some nice options posted here.  If you are looking for something less expensive, I have an older version Garmin Foretrex like this one, available for $129 on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Foretrex-301-Waterproof-Hiking/dp/B002EOULAE/ref=sr_1_sc_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1409853516&sr=1-2-spell&keywords=gps+garmin+Foertrex

I have used it for navigating in the Molokai race and you can set it so the whole screen shows the current speed only.  There are some pictures of it mounted on my board in this post:
http://zenwaterman.blogspot.com/2010/07/2010-molokai-2-oahu-race-by-robert.html

I used it in this speed test to show the speed in a weight test:
