My 7'10" SIMSUP S4 was challenging in steeper powerful waves - much too hard for me to control (likely due to the operator and not the board).   My 8'4" SIMSUP ST is completely different - perfect for me and fun in the small stuff and big stuff (very much in control). I'm in a beach break 95% of the time.

That makes sense since the split tail should give better hold in steep stuff compared to a more conventional Simmons tail.  But I would suspect that the S4 accelerates (planes) faster than the ST.

I talked with Kirk at L41 today on shaping me a ST at 7'8 x 30" with S glass.

His take on the ST: "The wide tail keeps it very stable with lots of lift and drive however the cutaway detail truly makes it surf like it's much narrower".

Good choice, and godd on you for the S glass. Bamboo deck??

Pono, I'm not privy to the bamboo option. Can you expound please? Cost vs reward?

yeah, i 've got a Simmons style V-chub as well and i couldn't live without it. an 8'6" that's great in just about everything and couldn't be more stable, but will start to slide out a bit when it gets too big.  But i wonder why more Simmons-esque boards aren't showing up in the USA with this design though:

I have an L41, S3 in Florida.  It's my only board right now. The plusses are stability (I ride an 8'2" at 210 lbs), speed on the waves (I beat close out sections that I didn't on other boards), and I find it to be very maneuverable.  The negative as Pono said is lack of glide. You don't have the range on a beach break to paddle sideways to catch a peak and you have to take off later.

All said, I love the board and can't find much that I like better.  One caution, if you get it S-glassed make sure you have a leash on at all times or your board may float away. Mine weighs 16 lbs

Benefit of the bamboo is no heel dings with a 245# clumsy guy on it. Adds a little cost and looks awesome.

In contrast with what PB said, my (strictly S-glass) Phoenix has some minor 1/4" to 1/2" foot depressions after about a year or so of being jumped on by my 205lb frame.  The rest of the board looks great.

Ok. These heel dings and foot depressions are under the deck pad? Or?

Yes, for instance, if I were to take my deck pad off, you would still see the foot depressions on the deck.  But, they are only cosmetic and provide good reference for my feet.

I live in New Jersey, and I have been riding a 7'8" Corran Retro which I bought off Jarvis for the last month.  I have taken it out in all the hurricane swells we had, and I really like it in overhead surf.  It gets on plane really fast, and it is much looser than my 9'0" Stretch would I would otherwise normally ride in those waves.  I have also ridden it in knee high slop and it works great.  You can really throw the board around and blow the fins out when you want.  The only downfall is that it does paddle slower, but it handles well in chop.  Definitely more of a workout.  All my prone boards have been getting a rest for the last month or so because I have been exclusively riding the Corran.  Its out of service for the next few weeks though because I blew out a fin box on the last swell, but it will be back in time for the next major hurricane swell.  I can't really imagine going any longer, in fact I will probably only drop it further down in length in the future.  Highly recommend.
