The drone footage is a prone surfer named Alan Sarlo.  Liked the close up with Laird and the some other prone surfer doing a dual shot on the pier.

I posted this on the "Who else" thread a few days ago. The vids were up there also. This shot is taken on the south side of the pier, near the end of the wave, after they had already cleared the pier. Look at the wave behind them.

How ironic that the SUP guy gets all this Malibu pier glory and also saving someone from drowning the next day. While Sarlo, the once supposed King of Malibu, gets no love from the mainstream media. Laird stole his thunder. I'm thinking this could be a small step for SUP acceptance at Malibu pier. Also wondering how this type of publicity affects the SUP industry.

I believe that other prone surfer on the dual shot on the pier is Sarlo.

It is. And he is not a big fan of SUPs at first point, although he doesn't seem to have a problem sharing waves with Laird.

I was thinking how ironic it is that at the same time there was the anti-SUP meeting in Hawaii, with the bogus "safety" argument, Laird's rescue made national news.

I don't think the general public or media make any distinction between standup and other types of surfing, which is fine.  He certainly does put a hole in surfers' arguments that standup surfers are clueless, unskilled kooks.  The days that they can convince anyone outside themselves that that's true will soon be over, with examples like this.

Boy, it's a good thing Laird was on one of those safe, manageable, and controllable SUPs....and not those other ones that all those proners seem to think are ridden at SanO.  ::) :-\

Me: 6'1"/185...(2) 5'1" Kings Foil/Wing Boards...7'10 Kings DW Board...9'6" Bob Pearson "Laird Noserider"...14' Lahui Kai "Manta"...8'0" WaveStorm if/when the proning urges still hit.

Ever see Laird's boards--that is, the ones he rides? He's not really into the little slash and burn ones. My favorite SUP video is the one Admin shot of Laird in insane wind and waves at Ho'okipa, surfing a 14 foot board like it was a shorty. There was one of them hanging at Hawaiian Surf and Sport a couple of years ago. 14' and monstrously heavy. No way I would even use it for a downwinder, never mind surf it with authority. The guy ain't human. We should all stop measuring ourselves against a guy who is obviously from the planet Zargon.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Yes, I have seen the boards he's on, and don't think I haven't wondered if we're not all going to find ourselves going full circle, and getting back to those size boards, once we get all of this "downsizing" stuff out of our systems.

I went from 9'6"--->9'4"-->8'5"-->7'8"-->and most recently back up to 9'0"......maybe a Laird 10'er isn't too far off in my future, but who know??  :)

So you're telling me if I never go sub 9 foot, I will be ahead of the trend as lengths go back up?

Stoked to be a trend setter.

It happens with everything.  If you're too far ahead of the trend, it looks like you're behind it, and vice versa.  Look at the old threads about paddle length.  As people were going longer and longer, a small group who'd already done that were going back to shorter, matching everyone who still hadn't moved to longer.  The good news if people go to longer boards is that the economy usually does better in the "long SUP" years, and an American League team will win the World Series.

Laird obviously has otherworldly SUP skills, but how much of his ability to manoeuvre large boards like that depends on his superhuman physique? In other words, if his head were somehow transplanted on to Kai Lenny's body, would he be unable to handle the big boards as well as before, but perhaps able to do radical tricks on tiny boards that he couldn't have done in his own skin? ???

I don't know, I'm still trying to picture Laird's head on Kai's body. It keeps coming out "Bobblehead".
