Nice PT.  Great to see enthusiasm and $ for a downwinder.  Conditions looked fun that day and remarkably like it was here on our south shore today.  Some of those fantastic days of  DJ's footage we've seen in Port Phillip Bay would sure be a great venue for a run.  Isn't there more interest in Melbourne than Perth?

The Perth downwind scene is pretty strong and from what I'm told, their December conditions are almost as predictable as Maliko in July. There is a famous trade wind known as the Fremantle Doctor that blows like clockwork in season. The Australian distributor of Starboard is based in Perth, and the the city also boasts the largest concentration of unlimited boards.

The difference with the Melbourne scene is that the terrain in Melbourne allows for novices to participate in downwinders in relative safety - we are in an effectively enclosed bay. Our weather (and wind) in Melbourne is notoriously hard to predict so organising a downwind race is quite difficult. We have also come to appreciate thanks to DJ, that the fastest downwind paddler is absolutely not necessarily the one having the most fun. In that sense, down winding in Melbourne is much more of a soul-surfing kind of vibe.

I'm hearing the entry list for this event features a few very prominent names. Should be a great race.
