EPS primer for solvent based paints.
« on: August 23, 2014, 03:26:51 PM »
I'm getting ready to paint an EPS board I just shaped. I've been curious about using non-water based paints directly on the foam. My buddy paints his blanks, then glasses them. I think he just uses water based paints, then glasses them. I found this primer that might work pretty good for solvent based spray paints. http://www.montanacolors.com/media/658_70_FT%20Specialty_Expanded%20Polystyrene%20ENG.pdf

The only thing I worry about is not getting good coverage with the primer, and melting the blank through the missed spots.

Has anyone tried this stuff?
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Hey TD -- I have used home depot latex paint as long as it isn't gloss -- gotta be flat and not too much of it so the epoxy will stick --
there is a company in Texas that sells a product Styropoxy used to coat hot wire cut architectual colums etc for homes -- after looking at it i decided it might be too heavy -
like you say if  you have a hole it and use polyster or oil based products they will burn the faom

Only used water based paints directly on eps blanks before or solvent based after glassing anything else will ether add extra weight melt the blank or cause bonding issues and very risky. What is the problem with water or acrylic based or painting after?

I happen to have a bunch of solvent based spray paint in colors I want to use on the board. I'll probably just buy some new water based paints. I don't want to risk damaging the blank. Add to the used paint mess I already have.

Hey TD -- HOme Depot has a great deal on sample paints in small jars for acouple of bucks each -- that way you dont get stuck with quart of color you don't like when it dries --

Good luck & lets see some pics --
