Are you afraid your SUP will be stolen from your car?
« on: August 22, 2014, 09:34:45 PM »
As the title says....are you afraid your SUP will be stolen when on top of your car with just normal straps?
Is there a way to secure it?

Just a newbie question as you can see...

When a board is new, yes but after multiple scabs, no worries.

yet many scowl when they see the price!

I've had mine for 2 years and they have brought me enough peace of mind to be worth the $90.

Of course I am !!!!!!...............Because it WILL be stolen.

Scumbags are everywhere.

If I am not in my car.... my board IS. I can even fit my 10'6 inside my Civic.

If I'm Road Trippin'.... my board is IN my car.

When I get home.... my car is behind the house, under a deck, right outside my kitchen window... BUT.... I take the board off EVERY time and bring it INSIDE the house.

Paddles are always inside my car.

Fa*k the thievin' Btards... I ain't giving them NOTHIN' !

Even older used boards will get stolen if left unattended and tied down with regular straps. I've heard that even if you use a Thule Sup Taxi or other locking strap system, if they want the boards bad enough they will cut the straps to steal the boards.

So far I have never had an issue when I leave my boards on my Xterra with the Thule Sup Taxi plus using a pair of Yakima locking straps wrapped around the boards and the factory bars plus using a pair of DocksLocks locking each board together. If they can steal my boards with that set up, then they probably would have smashed the windows and stole them if I locked them inside the car anyway.

I used to stress parking in hotel parking lots while traveling with SUPs on the roof. Then I got locking straps, and that made me feel better.

I know they're not perfect, but I combine that with always parking in a well-lit area of the parking lot.

I also use the Yakima locking straps and try to park in a well lit area. Even with a station wagon,  my 14 foot board isn't going to fit inside the car.

Allllrightyyyy then..... "You asked for it".... (if you are REALLY old... you remember that show)

I left the big 10.5" fin on for quick pictures... on a long road trip, I take it off so the board will move back and down the dashboard for better visibility.... makes a nifty armrest.

Plus it keeps it out of the sun if I am parking it somewhere.

When I first started SUPing, I bought an Astro Van instead of a board bag. It was cheaper than the SUP and is a convenient overnight storage or local surf car.

If I'm feeling rich... it's a great road trip SUPtruck as well  ;D

Yes.  I would never leave a board on top of my car unattended.

Locking straps are good at deterring thieves who will take your boards when you're inside somewhere for a bit but they can be cut. I wouldn't recommend loading the boards the night before and leaving the car outside hoping the straps are protecting them. I had a friend who did that and lost two Joe Blair SUPs...
