Looking for a thick shaft
« on: August 22, 2014, 07:45:05 AM »
I have two Werner Nitro paddles, a 1 pc and a 3 pc, and they both have a shaft thickness of about 1 1/4".

Is this standard throughout the industry? Seems like hand sizes are anything but standard, and I'd like to see what a thicker shaft feels like.

I wouldn't say it's standard. I also had a Werner Nitro and Fuse adjustable. I now have a Bending Branches adjustable along with a new Kenalu Ho'oloa, and the Kenalu has a noticeably smaller shaft circumference than my Bending Branches paddle.

Probably feel heavier. You can wrap it with a number of products to make it thicker and a have better feel. I see a lot of people with wrap on their shafts.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Hmmm. PDX must be sleeping.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Inflatable? We'll have to ask Mr. Kalama. Do you see inflatable shafts becoming popular in the near future? They:
 Are easy to travel with.
 Will fit in any purse.
Should be 10" longer, which is about the right length.
Have an easily inflatable ergonomic design.

Oops.
Yes, I certainly do want to respond to this thread.  I was thinking TallDude had a good point, that you can wrap a paddle shaft with tape, grips, etc. to make it as thick as you want, and it's easy to experiment or adjust to whatever you want.

Feet
To be perfectly honest.
I am quite happy with my shaft thickness.
It suits my hand size perfectly.
And of course all the years I have put into
practicing the pairing of the two I think I prefer it that way.
I did have thicker shafts in the past and felt that it was a bit of a strain
on the palm to accommodate.

I have also tried the shaft covers and found that there is a loss of feeling.
Sometimes leading to palm cramping.

If your hands are really that large perhaps you can try a more opened palm approach
and use two fingers to hold the shaft below and thumb above.
Like you are playing a bass guitar.
It may be that trying to grip a smaller shaft is straining your palm and wrist.

See if that helps.
