Just bought my first board
« on: August 21, 2014, 11:37:53 PM »
Hi Everyone,
I just bought my first SUP board-- a Bonga Southpoint Perkins Schaper-- 10' I believe.  Ready to take it out where I am at on Kauai.  I bought the board for $420 with paddle, so hopefully I got a decent deal. The board is ding and leak free (a few minor paint marks on the side where it's been laid down).

I rode it several times last weekend.  I tried it out on the calm water of the Wailua River and it did great.  The board felt swift and very maneuverable.  I took it out into a calm stretch of ocean after that and absolutely could not balance on it.  The board was riding low in the water compared to other boards I've tried.

The only difficult part about having the board is getting it to the 2nd floor of my condo. The stairwell is barely wide enough and it feels like a game of Operation getting it up the steps.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of board?  And does anyone have any advice?  Thanks!

What SUP doc? welcome to the Zone  :D

Congratulations on being able to paddle your board in flat-water... everything I found on the board is that the width is only 27" wide. No way I could even stand on it ! That's pretty narrow.... you must have skills!

Here's a link to a review done on the Zone in the early days.

How tall/heavy are you.. I sure hope you're short and very light.. or the only thing that board will bring you is frustration.. I can't stand on one either..

Don't know the board but according to Creek's research your in
for a challenge.

My first sup was a 9 x 28 120liter shortboard shape that I could only
stand on in a swimming pool.  Misinformed buy.
I sold it and bought a 12 x 32 200+l board to learn on.

Good luck doc.

May the force be with you Doctor! Caribsurf was the lucky recipient of my initial very paddleable, but alas, unsurfable SUP for me.

We all hope, however, that you have mad balance skills and absolutely rip on what sounds like a very challenging ride!

About 7 years ago I was in Tavarua, Fiji.
I surfed with a Doc from Kauai.
That is the brand he was riding.
Long board though not SUP.
He was charging on it... and fun to watch..

The rule of thumb which seems to work here on the EC is
Boards under 30" wide are more work than fun...

Used to have 10 foot bonga....very tippy in choppy conditions unless you highly skilled/lightweight. Friend who is a heavyweight now uses it as a longboard

Thank you for the responses.  I'm 6'0, 190 lbs.  I'm 26 years old and am in good shape, but my shoulders are so broad that I have a very high center of gravity.  My balance isn't the best.  Not the worst, but definitely not the best.  The board flies down the river and steers really well.  I'll probably use it mostly on the rivers around here.  But I also wanted something I could surf a little bit with.

Standing on it in the ocean without a wave behind it felt impossible though.

I'm only here for 10 more months so then I will either sell the board or bring it back to Tennessee to my lake.
