Flu shot
« on: August 21, 2014, 11:55:34 AM »
Spinoff from the Tetanus shot thread. I'd like to miss as little water time as possible during flu season. Do you guys get the flu shot every year?

Not yet.  My wife travels a lot.  Her Doctor/friend always tells her to get it.  She knows too many people who get sick after the shot.  So, add her to your list of not yet, for the over 60 crowd.

I do, but still seem to get regular viral contagions no matter what.  The flu shot causes some mild symptoms due to exciting the immune system, but not enough to avoid getting the shot.

It's common to get a little sick when you get the shot. I don't do it religiously--but then I don't floss all the time or click my seat belt right away. I spend a fair amount of time in emergency rooms or recuperating from surgery, but I haven't been sick in probably 30 years.

I do now.  In the Navy, I used to get sick from it AND a sore arm but a nurse at the VA  asked if I wanted the flu shot and I said yeah and was waiting for the shot and  didn't notice the needle nor get the flu that year.   I've been getting it every year now, sometimes making $200 in a research  study.  Also got the tetanus shot in'89 after a major hurricane and  renew it every ten years.

And don't forget the shingles vaccine - it's pricey but worth full price if you've  ever seen anybody 60+ with shingles.

What about the anthrax vaccine the military received? Heard that had some side effects.

I get one almost every year. The years I don't,  I regret I didn't.  Its total medical nonsense that getting vaccination reduces your immune response. Here in Sweden there is uninformed and irrational resistance to flu vaccines. 1000 people a year die here because people that should get vaccinations don't.  think of it this way: you didn't get vaccination,  you get the flu, before you break out 100% you infect a bunch of other people, perhaps an older person, then they die of complications.

Specifically directed at health care workers but still applicable to the general populace

I get one every year and havent had influenza since as far back as i remember.  I get it despite it being an evil conspiracy by the gov'ment involving black helicopters and Jenny McCarthy.  Jenny is an authority on medical research, esp breast implants.  She wrote a 10th grade paper on infectious disease, right before she dropped out to pose for Playboy.

Got a pneumonia vaccine this week.  They shot me in the quadraceps, felt like i had a broken leg the next day.  My doctor has a PhD and MD from Harvard, but i almost called Jenny to get her OK on it.

I have to get it every year for work, but I wouldn't get it otherwise. I have seen a bunch of people get guillian barre syndrome months after getting the flu shot. One year I got the shot and 2-3 days later developed a 103 fever- went to a walk in clinic, and they diagnosed me with the flu, and I had the full on flu for about 5 days. Last year I got it and shortly after got bronchitis that messed me up for about 2 months.

I'm a teacher, and am always around the little germ incubators called students, so I usually get the shot.  Going today to get one even though I hate doing it.  The years I haven't gotten the shot, I have gotten a nasty flu that keeps me out of work for a week and makes me feel bad for longer than that.  When I get the shot, I get away with just a cold or two.   Knocking on wood.
