Ding! Need advice
« on: August 19, 2014, 06:35:31 PM »
I got my first ding today paddling into a submerged rock:

It's hard to tell from these pictures, but the rock appears to have punctured the "high-resistance skin" on the bottom of this Fanatic Falcon, as well as gouging some deep scratches in it. Fortunately it happened about a minute before I got out of the water, so there wasn't much time for water to infiltrate.

I don't know anything about board construction beyond the marketing info, so I'm hoping the Zone can give me some advice on this. Should I keep the board out of the water until I get it patched up?  How is a ding like this repaired? Can anyone located near the NH seacoast recommend someone locally that does a good job with ding repair? And what should I expect to pay?

Thanks!

Having already become a ding-bat a couple of times in my short time with a hard board, I would call that a pro repair.  You could probably keep it seaworthy sealed with some Solar epoxy and maybe a bubble gum epoxy repair, but it looks like a section around the ding would need to be cut out and re-layered.

After dropping my board off the car, I think I have found two more places that were vulnerable from that original car drop injury and probably already there after having the main crunches fixed by the pro shop.  The nose was cracked and leaking (temporary bubble gum repair) and now I notice a bubbling crack around a fin box.  I can feel a small crack ridge with my finger.  I will probably do some Solar epoxy/bubble gum to seal it until I can get it back to the repair shop for pro treatments on the newly noted things. When I am not using the board over the days off, I keep the drain plug open to drain.

Just as I am bonding with the board, I am wondering if it will last for a even a year under my careless ministrations.

Definitely keep it out of the water until repaired.

I would approach this repair by cutting out all the loose, delaminated material, level the foam, feather the edges with 60 grit about 3" in all directions from the edges of the damage.  Two layers of 6 oz fiberglass, epoxy with solid white pigment.  Fair out the patch to 220 grit, sacrificing most of the top layer, sand to factory texture.

Make sure there is no water in the board otherwise it can cause delimitation problems.
