Show this Tom Servais shot of Kai to your SUP hater friends next time they try to tell you that stand up is not really "surfing".

No matter what anyone might say, that is one killer bottom turn!  Real Hawaiian power surfing?

I have no idea what it actually looked like, but I felt like I was pulling some serious Gs (like in the photo) on my bottom turns during the last swell.  So much so that the proners  gave me a reluctant look of approval. ;)

Having grown up surfing in the 60's & 70's, I was shaped by the era of the "Bottom Turn"

Every ride was started and defined by how big your "gouge" was,

Barry Kanaiaupuni set the bar... and I have spent a lifetime trying to live up to that expectation.... it is the defining attribute of every SUP I buy....can I lay it down?????

so yeah Kai.... lay down some tracks  ;D ;D ;D

Yeppers...BK...full throttle...
Definitely an influence...my buddy Neal, only rode red BK singles...and, only surfed when it was solid overhead...

Me, when I was 18 in early 1968 with my Barry Kanaiaupuni / Drew Harrison pintail by Rick Surfboards.
I got it for Sunset Cliffs and La Jolla spots on big days, I loved that board.
But I sure wish we had leashes back then, it lived a fairly short life.  :-\

It takes a quiver to do that.

Weasels wake--Did you surf in front of Cal. Western during the late 60's?
I surfed at the rights in front of the campus, from 66-70.

Yes, and we called it Cal wee wee's, don't really know why, but that was the name.
It takes a quiver to do that.

Cool pic, Greg...
I included a pic of one of my bud's BK's...

I had the same issue with my G&S shown below...note the Greenough flex fin...lots of low tide Rincon and SB point rock dings...but, I had it restored...same with my Brewer gun...

My triple stringer Channin/Diffenderfer gun was similar to your BK...my pic has deteriorated...but, you can see the Channin logo and the Pipeline shot I laminated on the bottom after the first snap...I snapped it in half 3 times in big Humboldt surf...put it back together twice...that board went through some wars in big, cold, gnarly surf...and, lost...but, man did I pull into some dump truck sized barrels well worth the consequences for the views I got...;-)

There were a number of shark attacks there when I was studying oceanography...I would think that the bitten ones kept their boards...
