The Starboard Sprint 17x23 is something ELSE !!!
Wish that it would be easier to try one out around here.
One person owns one, but he's always on it - must be lov' for the fast stuff on flat water.

Rounded bottoms are fast but hard to balance on, so it's a matter of balancing speed and stability.

We did some speed tests in 2011 for the Zen Waterman blog with interesting results which were discussed in detail here on the Zone:

12'6 Speed test:

There was also a 14' speed test done by a crew in Australia, I could not find the link.

Best comparison I have seen so far.
I always enjoy hearing people feedback (sometimes, it's nothing more than their feelings) but it still provides valuable insight.
Comparing 6 boards really ads to great feedback - thanks for sharing !!!!

These UL boards seem to be on the "more" stable-side of things. Interesting…

I finally bit the bullet and got myself the Starboard Sprint 17'6" x 23"-
This board is just amazing, nearly everything I could have dreamed of.

I have had it for couple of weeks now, and aside from narrowing down my fin size and angle, THIS BOARD is seriously versatile.

Finally am using a board that truly glides (so close to a surfski, it's not even funny).
I use a Slater FCS fin (8.5") for totally flat conditions and calm ocean, but also use a canadian fin 10" weedless (that is massive) for added stability when needed, like small downwind conditions.

Average speed over 20km: 8.9km/h - currently my best speed on any distance.

Couple of my friends have tried it; they really like it in flat water, but find it too tippy in the ocean.
Lighter paddler seem to really like it, while heavier ones have doubts about stability (perhaps they have too much strength ahahha).

Anyway, thanks to this forum for the your help and feedback !
(best board i have tried that has now found a home)

Nice looking board. How much do you weigh? I was considering this board too but I don't think it's an option after the poor quality I have experienced lately from Starboard (cracking underfoot during normal flat water paddling). I talked to the starboard rep who estimated this was 1.5-2 mph (~3 km/hr) faster than his 14' race board. If that's accurate, I would expect averages of 7-8 mph (up to 13 km/hr) for this board on flat water.

1.5 to 2 mph faster than a 14' raceboard seems optimistic.

Hey Photofr,

Nice board, try the Makani "canadian" Kawa model.  thin foil should work great on that board.

I weight 54 kg (something like 130 pounds). Underfoot, I would be careful too with that board: nearly 18 feet long, and only 9.5 Kilos - I didn't buy it for its strength (LOL).
After having a 90kg person try it, I could feel my underfoot "softening up" a bit.

Speed-wise in France (because I think the water is faster here ahahahah)
About 10% increase in speed from my other two 14' boards, however, the difference is breathtaking still.
On more than 20km, I held 8.9km/h here:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/599192014

Put into prospective, I am far from a fast paddler (I have endurance, but speed is a different subject).
Two paddling friends (who happen to be top-5 in the country) paddled with me on that same day. They clearly were working really hard to keep up with me (5 strokes for them, 3 for me) - so it's not just about speed, but the GLIDE IS AMAZING.

The board is one of the lightest I know of for this size - and in the Starboard lineup. It's gonna be fragile, and I expected that.

For rough waters:

Ha… those darn canadians - they make good things.
(I happen to be french, now living in France).

I haven't ridden a ton of race boards, but I'm finding this puppy to be faster then anything I've ridden yet. In choppy conditions in can be a handful if you're not moving, but once you start laying down some power it goes. Glide is probably nothing like the unlimiteds though. Just wanted to post some pictures of the hull shape since the talk is about rounded designs.

PS: These picts are Ninja Tuna's board from the "My Laird" thread, I don't have these angled shots of mine.

Very interesting.
Do you have some specs on that board ?
Did you shape and lay out the carbon yourself ?
(nicely done… who ever did it).

It looks like a twin fin… is that right ?

Would like to see more pics, like on the water… if or when you get a chance.

Like NT said, I would call it a fast touring board, not a race board...though Annabel Anderson did get a second place running the 10-mile distance race at a BOP on one in 2011 (Dana Point).

1.5 to 2 mph faster than a 14' raceboard seems optimistic.
Ditto Mike.  When I go from a 14' X25 or 26" race board to a 19' X 24" UL, my speeds go from around 6.0 mph avg to 6.5-6.7 mph avgs.  Once you are in the 7-8mph zone, you are approaching OC1 & surf ski speeds, and I don't think we'll be seeing too many guys hitting those marks for awhile.  It will happen, but not yet.  Just look at some of the speeds the top guys in the world avg when they race UL… They are approaching 7mph, but just barely.

Kings newest UL that they brought up for Round The Rock was 19' X 23" with a very round bottom like a ski.  The fastest board I have ever paddled but I could only get about 5 strokes in before I had to brace to keep from swimming.  I chose a more stable 19' X 24" Kings for the day which ended up being wise as the boat chop for 13 miles was ridiculous this year.  My team mate however raced the 23" wide UL and won the race even after falling in 3 or 4 times.
