King's Crocodile Noserider
« on: August 19, 2014, 05:08:00 AM »
My beautiful 10' Crocodile old school noserider from Dave Daum at King's has been in my possession since Arthur. Shout out to Dave Cropper at Cinnamon Rainbows in New Hampshire for taking very good care of me once again!

The Croc is 10' x 31.5" x 4" x 127 liters and weighs 26.5 pounds with pad and a monster fin. Dave D. had made one for himself that I found out about while having a conversation about an Ian Cairns One to Five short sup.

He designed it with a step deck, nose concave, dual concaves in the rear, and plenty of tail rocker. His personal board was glassed very light and narrower and thinner.

I asked for a heavier glass job as I was trying to capture the feel of old school longboards, and because of our shorebreak conditions here on the cape - sand with rocks. Never have issues with pressure dings on the deck as I only weigh 150 or less; but I have plenty of pressure dings on the underside towards the nose!

I have ridden the board in waves from double over ankle to head high and does exactly what I had hoped for. Turns easily from the tail as the tail kick combined with the low swing weight makes for quick turns.

Dave calls it the Crocodile because it is under water when you are paddling. It is a slug to paddle because of the low volume, extreme deck doming and super thin rails. However, once you have caught a wave you "are sittin on top of the world". He has only made three of them! I am so fortunate to have one here on the cape which is a long way from San Diego.

Oh yeah it noserides pretty well!

Cool looking board. Once going down the line, can it be trimmed and driven from the mid point, or do you have to step all the way back to initiate any turning at all?

The crocodile has the really thin knife rails and domed deck patterned after boards from the late sixties. It is quite possible to make trim and turn adjustments from the center of the board since the rails can buried without having to cross step back.

Also fun to shake the board while you are on the front third. The step deck, concave, dome, and knife rails make it possible to turn from the nose in certain places on the wave.

I am sure Dave Daum can speak to this far more eloquently than I. This style of longboard is one of several branches on an old tree.

But it sure is relaxing up there!

beautiful board and thanks for posting pix.  vol of around 120l -- i don't think i could even stand on it.  let me ask you this: how does it paddle head on into a heavier wind?  my L41 has a wide nose and does terrible. but i think yours might do better if only because, as you say, it's mostly underwater in the first place.

It is quite stable in chop. The pad area is above water but not much else. But against the wind not so much. Even in the old days offshore winds were never a longboard's best friend. That big schnozzle acts like a sail. 10-15 kts ok - anything more bad idea.

Of the boards in your quiver that I know of from the zone it is probably most similar to your Angulo custom from what I could see. Rick told me it was tippy!

Any luck on son of pig?

Looks like Dave and the boys at King's have created demand. Croc is now listed in their latest online info. I kinda liked it when there were only three of them..

Hey Big,

How's the Croc treating you?  Find yourself bringing it out more or less than you thought you would?

Not a winter favorite. Almost broke it in the shorepound that Rick described. NOT on the same day. Smaller, but I did resort to the spear throw described by Outcast to get rid of the paddle before trying to keep the Croc intact and me from getting killed!

Having made the disclaimer I had some great sessions on it both here and in RI when conditions were smaller and cleaner in the knee to chest high range. I might even keep it for a while! Still has a volume of 125 and paddles like a slug when I am wearing my Michelin Man winter costume. BUT I am NOT looking to replace it as my noserider of choice in the quiver!! 8) 8)
