Carry handles switch?
« on: August 15, 2014, 01:47:23 PM »
I did a brief search but didn't find an answer to:

Is it possible and easy to take out the carry handle of a Fanatic AllWave and replace it with a new FCS ledge style handle?

How to proceed? If not a simple a simplistic fix will just add a strap.

The FCS handle is designed to be installed prelamination. It can be retrofitted but it would be more work.

I Checked into getting the handle on my Starboard changed about a year ago.  At that time the cost to have a shop do it was about $100.

Thanks. Looks like I will be adding the carry strap tomorrow then. But, those FCS handles are PERFECTION.

The strap and or line will stretch.  So, attach the two tie down pieces as far apart as you can get them.  I've had tighten mine twice.  The second time, I used a stiffer line, doubled it thru the handle loop and deck pieces.  I really like the handle.  It just needed some adjustment.

Handles can sometimes be a source of leaks and more difficult to see them when they do.  SIC inserts two small inserts with a small bar across the diameter.  Around this bar they attach a loop of spectra line.  The two loops are positioned about 3/4 of a paddle length apart.  So your handle is sticking the paddle through the loops and carrying it that way.  For extra long DW boards we use, it's a great way to go.  You can spread your hands far apart, giving you much better leverage in high wind.  Even on a SUS board I hate stepping into a hole.

But if you use this method make sure you un-sharpen the edges of the inserts because if left as is they will cut even spectra line.  Just take a knife and dull the edge.  No matter what always check the line to make sure it's not wearing or tearing.

Here is an FCS install that I did about a month ago.  Not too crazy about the handle but love the full pad.  No more Monster Traction Paint for this board.

You can easily use stick-on loops to make a paddle handle in the SIC manner. I've done it with O'Fishl epoxy-on leash plugs and it works great. Nothing much to step on and out of the way. they're also good for tying your slippers on the nose and as an extra leach plug in the back. I used loops of heavy spectra for the paddle loops.

It takes a quiver to do that.
