Video: SUPing the Sea Caves at Santa Cruz Island
« on: July 30, 2014, 06:44:36 PM »
Just got back from my annual Santa Cruz Island trip.  SUPing in those caves is now the only way to go for me; love it!  Here's a vid of a few of the best moments.

The video is a little bumpy because it was filmed by friends sitting in kayaks using GoPro cameras.

Just beautiful.

The water temps in SoCal seem to be really high now, is this el nino?

One of my buddies brought a water thermometer and measured the water at just a little over 70 degrees.  And that's 14 miles out in the ocean.  Weird warm.  We could use an El Nino with our drought.  I hope so.

Cool caves Zooport. I think the helmet was a good call given the unpredictable swell in those tight quarters.
It's not overhead to me!

Very cool video thanks for the share love it . Just one edit tip don't know what programme you used , but if you are Mac iMovie or Final cut pro has a stabilisation tool which would have taken all that mild shake out. As long as the subject isn't too near to the edge of the frame it works great because it does crop the clip.   :)

Thanks Ralph for my green Nalu that I bought from Sup-Position!  It worked great.  No hassle from Island Packers, it passed off as a kayak, no prob.  The Nalu won't be winning any races but I was able to keep up with all but the one fastest kayaker.  I'm happy with it even if I only use it once a year at the island.

Oh yeah, it's foolish to go in there without a helmet.  There are also falling rocks on occasion.  On last year's trip, one fell off of a cliff and landed a couple feet from a friend.

Which size Nalu did you get?  11 or 12.5?
Do you feet get tired of standing in the channels?

I got rid of my kayak a while ago and only really miss it for going to Santa Cruz island (and to go fishing sometimes).  The Nalu might be something that I'd like to have.

Great video. Thanks
So how did you transport the kayaks and Nalu over to the islands?
Does the transport boat only allow Kayaks, not SUPs?
If so, then your idea of passing off the Nalu as a kayak is ingenious!

Don't get the 11; too slow.  I got the 12.5 and it is not as quick as I would like, but it is OK.  I really like it for what it is.  Not the worlds greatest kayak, not the worlds greatest SUP, but pretty decent for both, and amazing versatility.  Stand, sit, kneel, whatever, no big deal.  Very stable.  Easily fishable.  Feet and legs did not feel tired at all from standing in those channels, in fact, it's pretty comfortable.  The strangest part is because it's plastic, it gives a little under the pressure of your feet and that takes a little getting used to.  All in all, I'm glad I bought it.

Wow, thanks!  You are right about all the other details.  The transport boat we use will not carry SUP's, in fact, I don't think anyone will.  Since the Nalu is a kayak, made by a kayak company, they didn't say a word.  A Nalu, or similar, is what someone would have to use to SUP the island unless they had a private boat.

What's the name of the boat/landing that transported the 'yaks to the island?
My buddy lives near Ventura, so if it's a transport boat that's open to the public, I'd like to check it out someday.
