I generally rub my hands with sand if I had put sunscreen on and just wipe my hands on my shorts paddling out to get the rest. You really don't need to grip the shaft so hard , it's more push and pull than up or down pressure. All my shafts are pretty smooth and never really have a problem.

I was slipping quite a bit with my lower hand when I got first my methane but a little board wax solved the problem for me as well. Simple and easy.
