Red paddle inflatable?
« on: July 17, 2014, 04:57:58 PM »
New to paddle boarding.  I live near one if the great lakes and go on holiday on the east coast for three weeks every year.

I am looking for a my first sup. i am 165 pounds my wife 130 and kids range 40 to seventy.

I am leaning to an inflatable as i already have a large roof box up top for my east coast trips and think trying to cartop a regular sup for 1400 miles each way will be a drag (literally). Whitt just texted this member stating that a desert would freeze the conditions of the cba including the additional 7 years

Mission for the sup is recreational paddling (out on the water for an hour at a go getting some exercise). Kids using it to have some fun (with an adult), maybe a little fishing and in small surf i will try to surf it.  I know this sounds like i want one board that will di it all (okay minus touring or racing)

I am leaning to the ride 10'6 which strictly speaking may be more volume than i need but i thought would be good for beginner, good for hosting me and a kid or two, stable for fishing and surfable even if not the most nimble.

I had also considered the all water at 9'6 but am leaning against that.

If we really take to supping i thought i can get a more specialized board later.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Hi raff, you could also consider the 10' Surfer at your weight. It is 30" wide but still nice and stable. I'm 190lbs and close to the recommended max and when I tested it, it rode well so you'd be fine. It'll go better in the waves than the 10'6" but there isn't as much deck space for fishing, kids etc. still has ties downs though. 10'6" is a very popular board.

I've got the last couple of 2013 10' boards on sale right now, free paddle and free leash. No major changes for 2014 to the boards - http://greenwatersports.com/shop/red-paddle-co-10-surfer-package

Thanks for response julian. I am north i the 49th parallel so don't want to ship over the border.    However, i will give some thought to the surfer model.

Your web site has great info and if i was in the us i would order from
You.

Ok pulled the trigger on the ride. Question re inflating. I am not seeing the pressure gauge move. I understand this is most likely because I am not pumping enough, but it could be bad gauge. Any idea how many single or double strokes I need to inflate to 15psi plus.

My Blue Planet 12'6" takes two hundred strokes to get the guage to show a few psi. A hundred more gets me twelve. My 145 pound son cannot push the pump much past ten psi - his feet leave the ground - you are likely safe,  I think.

Very common question. Most likely not enough pressure yet and gauge doesn't really move until about 8-10PSI.

Which pump do you have? The regular (high volume) or the HP (high pressure)? Regular pump for the 10'6" Ride took me: 4m47s to 20PSI. It gets quite hard beyond 15PSI with the regular pump.

I did an actual count comparison but with the 10' Surfer when I tested a few pumps: http://greenwatersports.com/3542/4-of-the-best-inflatable-sup-pumps-tested The 10' is thinner and shorter so much less volume (190l). Ride has 218l or ~15% more.

Downstrokes to 20 PSI.
Regular pump: 225. (My guess 260)
HP: 300. (My guess 345)

Downstrokes to 15 PSI.
Regular pump: 180. (My guess 210)
HP: 220. (My guess 255)

I'm close to the same weight (155), but I usually take my dog (45lbs) and have looked at the 12'6 Race and the 10'6 Ride. Have you gotten the Ride on the water yet? How are you liking it?

I just took it out today cor the first time with my kids on ut with me.

At 225 pounds (165 me and 60 pound child). It was paddlable but noticeably more sluggish and slow than wirh me aline.  I actually had 260 pounds on it, and it was doable for hacking around but i would not recommend it

If i was not thinkin about surfing it and i was new tononoarding i might go for the longer board if i was usually going to have an xtra 45 pounds.
