That's nice but way too short.  I need to see about 3 hours of that footage.

Insanely cool.  Let's get more drone footage of downwinders.

That was spectacular and I would watch three hours of that as well.  Especially wish we could have seen the Kamalo to Kaunakakai section of the run where the gliding is arguably the best in the world.  But maybe this was just a teaser for more.

The drone was operated from the Lenny boat.

That start footage was in the wow category.  Everyone was flying... with no glides.  The few glides we saw after the start were great from that angle.   The question is, will the drones be able to operate in strong winds?  The winds were minimal on the part we saw in this vid.

Very cool.

That would be the next drone challenge - to get them to fly in stronger winds (and for longer). I guess they just have to be bigger......imagine if they could carry people as well?

I think the drone capabilities are better than a helicopter and the big plus is that they aren't so scary for the paddlers with the size and rotor wash when they're overhead.  I saw a big guy, Ekolu Kalama, get blown off his board during a race from a heli.

Big enough to take a heavier cam would be good enough.  Although that wide angle footage didn't look too bad from the above POV.

My current drones will handle 20 kts, though it's tricky making maneuvers in that wind. I'm working on one that should handle 40 kts and carry a good payload or fly pretty long--maybe an hour. Both of the drones I'm playing with now can lift a mirrorless SLR, but flight time suffers. I suspect the general future for drone footage will include 360 cameras more than bigger cameras with elaborate gimbals. The editing potential of 360 is huge.
