Old School Canvas Rafts
« on: July 13, 2014, 09:09:20 AM »
Brings back memories of the 1970's.
Found these at Ace Hardware for $12.00.
1-2' waves today were double over head and fun on
the Raft...

Great retro comeback Ralph. I used to have one of the blue and yellow ones that I rode my first wave on about 50 years ago.

I have to check out our Ace Hardware now.

Right on Ralph, I'm on my way to Ace. I remember renting them down in Pacific Beach by the pier when I was a kid. They were also the blue ones with yellow ends and a rope. Lost many a Fed-Mart fin at the pier on my rented surf mat.

Those were about all we had on the east coast when I was a kid. Loved "surfing" them. Might have to add one to the board rack. Or roll one up behind the truck seat.

Deb used to love to surf those exact rafts back in our college daze...pretty fun...check out her smile...that was until there started to be a number of increasing shark bites on surfers at her fav spot...;-)

Of course, our local surf god, George Greenough was the king of all mat surfers...I shared an over DOH wave with him in front, that I will never forget...

GG mat wave ride slowed down on Maui in '67...

I remember renting those canvas rafts at Virginia Beach back in 1969 when I was 12 years old. I was there on account of brothers wedding. Waves were big that week. I spent every day in the water.

Yeah got my start on them too, ~1970 in Atlantic and Jones beaches on
Long Island.

Seem to remember they would give a nasty rash. No surf shirts yet.

H2Oman posted up some videos here awhile back showing their come back.
El Porto beachies I think.

I remember renting those at laguna beach in the early 70's. What a fun way to thrash in the shore-break! And yes, they gave some serious rashes :-( When we were tired and hungry we would grab a burger across PCH at " wimpys ". If memory serves me right ( and thats fading fast ) Thanks for helping me revisit my childhood.  ;D

Need a GoPro Raft mount!  ;)
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Bit late to the thread, didn't show on ACE when I looked.

But Amazon has them for $11.78 delivered with PRIME for the 60" x 29" size.  Need to order some for the kids for use in Lake Michigan later this summer.  If it warms up.

Why did I ever get into water sports - should have choose something less costly and disruptive to the family.  Like drugs and hookers....

Just ordered the 45" one. Might be able to snap off the top better than the 60 incher.

I might have given up some glide.

We got a quiver of the Cali 805 made 4th Gear Flyers for the shop with the wifey's prompting after I resurrected some of her mat surfing pics from college...
It's been a fun call with the 70*F H20 temps and wind swell lately here in SB...

Even though we all started on the low tech rafts...we went up a notch on getting these surf mats...there has been some evolution over the last 25 years...;-)
One of our good friends has been carrying on the torch of George Greenough since he left...so, we went with a 4GF Tracker, Standard, & some Omnis...
These were locally hand made by Paul Gross and have his latest internal technology...etc...

Slap in a waterproof iPod, a good pair of fins, and a waterproof camera and you can have yourselves a fun time body whomping...;-)

Some fun vids that one of the local mat surfers put together...
