I think something is up with your link, I see a video for a Sri Lanka trip. I saw the video you are talking about, unfortunately that board didn't make it.  Surfline had some highlights for our epic holiday swell, which actually had pics of Daniel charging the wedge (Hell musta froze over for Surfline to feature  SUP in a context that isn't negative), and shots of board in 2 pieces:

Those guys have testículos grandes, no doubt, but it's not a great wave.  Sure, it's double the size of anywhere else on a good S swell, extremely hollow, but it's just a drop, a quick tube, and then WHAM!  I love to watch those gladiators, but there is no temptation to paddle out.

Reminds me of trying to skateboard on the 405 during rush hour.

Possible naive question, but can the water all by itself break the board, or does it require striking on the reef or rocks?

I saw a board get loose at the SUP event at Steamer's earlier in the year and watched it get smashed and broken against the rocks, kind of painful to watch a beautiful board get trashed. I have also seen a handful of riders walking around with broken boards, mostly at Steamer's.

Yes. water itself has a great deal of pressure.

Agree; I've lost two or three boards that way over the years.  If a heavy lip hits the board dead center and flat on the water, it can snap a board pretty easily.  We broke one a few years ago in 2 -3 foot surf.  Still don't understand exactly how that happened.  It wasn't a SUP but a thin shortboard.  All the other times it has been at least 6 foot or bigger and extremely powerful.
