I wouldn't use a soft rack to carry a SUP, unless it was in an emergency or I was going a very short distance very slowly. The last time I used one, the roof depressed in the rental car I was using, when a gust of wind caught it. Oops!

There is a very prominent SUP rental shop on Maui that sends out SUPs on rental cars with just two plain straps.  I was totally floored at first.  But, if you think about it, distributing the weight of the board the entire length of the roofline makes sense.  As long as the traction pad is clean, it's a fool proof approach.

I am still up in the air on what I am going to buy. I like the sup taxi but $250 is a lot of money. The yakima suppup is at the top of what I am looking to spend. I know that it just came out and not a lot of people have bought it yet. I still might just buy some dakine long pads and some baja straps and call it good.

Kanulocks are half the price of a SUPPup and a bigger deterrent to would-be opportunists if you plan to leave the board unattended for a while. If that's not an issue, plain straps and pads are enough.

There's a prominent shop in Oahu that sends then out with ONE strap.

I'm one of the few that hates straps and pads: the pads always slide around on the bars, the straps are always tangled and leave colored marks and indentations on the board, requires multiple trips to each side of car when adjusting to get the slack out,  hate throwing the straps over, etc.  But I have small time windows to paddle and need to load/unload quickly.
Thule has an answer to the sup pup, the 811, which are soft cradles instead of pads and heavy duty straps, the only advantage vs pads are the solid grippy cradles.

I'm not a fan of standard pads and straps either. I make my own pads with pipe insulation and PVC tape, and I use rope to tie the boards down. It makes people like covesurfer nuts to see the boards wiggling, but I never groove the rails and with the ropes permanently tied to the center of the rac you toss a rope over and secure your board in high wind

Skate, you can take the money you would save on the Sup Pup and get a board bag (if you don't already have one), some locking straps, and some Da Kine pads.  You'd be all set.

Best pads out there...http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performance+Products/555/70001/10002/-1 only 4.99 each shipped free. Thicker on one side to provide extra cushioning. Held on to the load bars with 20 mil PVC pipe wrap tape from Home Depot http://www.homedepot.com/p/Orbit-2-in-x-50-ft-20-Mil-Pipe-Wrap-Tape-53550/100179778

Can't claim credit for this setup, found it in another thread from quite a while back, don't remember who suggested Jegs...maybe Ponobill?

A chest of drawers recently was delivered with those foam angles along the edges for shipping protection.  Perfect for covering flat factory bars, or for padding in between multiple boards. Follow Ponobill's instruction for the pipe insulation and they'll work just fine.

What is the point of the suppup? Does it lock? Does it make it easier to put your board on your car?
Yakima designers were asked to come up with an idea so Yakima dealers would be able to sell something to compete with the Thule Taxi. A Yakima designer came to my shop and asked my opinion about this product that they just made with their 3d printer. a year ago. I thought and still think its a waste. I makes the board higher off the roof and has kind of a weird tie off. For $150 it should do it much better.
Pads and straps, pads and straps. Say it fast (be bop).
