Nice Rack
« on: June 15, 2014, 09:49:53 PM »
I have dozens of things I need to do, so instead of doing any of them I made this today out of PVC. It's some kind of avoidance thing. I keep dreaming up projects to avoid doing the projects I need to do. Kind of cool though, I'll be able to store six boards (including the Woodie Javelin) on the wall, with a single rope to haul them up and down. I was going to motorize it, but that would be crazy. I do have just the right motor and geartrain though.

No, that's a great rack.

PB,   I particularly like the idea of the up haul; you are fortunate to have the height.  I suspect you will need a larger diameter line or add pulleys to increase purchase when you load it with five boards.  I assume you have a strong cleat on the floor..   Further thought, with my luck, I don't think I would expose five boards to a failure of some <$1 part.   Still, a good idea.

..what's the Lotus/Lola-looking #15 down the wall?

It's the original body from my AMBRO, a car that was built in 1959 by the same guys that built Peyote, the race car I have an unhealthy relationship with.

The white car on the rack is the AMBRO. I'm rebodying it, because the old body weighed two hundred pounds. Probably the heaviest fiberglass body ever made except for the 1956 corvette.

One of the many projects I'm supposed to be doing.

The rope is heavier than it looks in the photo, and the pulleys are stout. I have a 2-1 mechanical advantage as it is rigged.  I hung my full weight off the attachment points. I'm a little worried about the glued joints. I did them up with primer and a heavy glue application (recommended for solvent welded joints) but I'm going to test it today with some weights before I put boards on it.

I was going to weld up a rack, but I got lazy at the last minute.

I would have probably used schedule 80 at a few of the connectors and tubing taking the bulk of the force. The angle probably reduced the force enough to be in a safe zone. But if the top one fails? Personally, I prefer using ABS. It's about the same cost schedule 40 PVC, but less than schedule 80. It's readily availible, and the 1-1/2" isn't to bulky. ABS won't just shear like PVC, It will bent and deform before it totally fails.

The ABS looks similar to the shaft of a paddle. Like the one in this picture.

Yeah, I was going to use ABS, and they had a 45 degree T that would have made the rack a little less complicated, but I figured out a way to get a wider V using a straight T and 45 joint, so I went for it. I didn't realize how much better it is than PVC before I read up on it this morning after wetstuff's comments. So it goes. If it fails the weight test the next version will be welded aluminum tubing and will cost about ten times as much. Got to get my TIG pulled out of the under-garage at our house anyway. But it's going to take three men and a boy to get it onto a trailer. Sucker is heavy.

so far, so good. It's a lot of weight to raise with one good arm, though I'm sure I could manage it and one more board if I had two wings. Still, it will be easy to double the mechanical advantage with just one more pulley in the middle on top. I just hope I didn't cut the rope too short.

That space heater looks a little close.... Maybe lower the boards when you're running the heater?

I like it, Bill--and garage racks are about the only thing SUP that I can claim some authority on.  http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,19503.0.html

You likely don't need any engineering tips from me, but given my build had two pretty catastrophic failures, I highly recommend some kind of safety catch or something--just so you aren't relying on one knot, fitting or something of the like.  The most expensive part of my project was having to fix boards that fell onto the concrete from 8ft up.  Hard to believe PVC can hold that much, but I'm sure you worked out all the weights, etc.  I made the mistake of just building as I went without doing much figuring.  Sounds like you've got a motor, but pretty cheap winches at Harbor Freight that would do the job.

I was going to motorize it, but that would be crazy.

Agreed.  At the very least it would need to be fitted w/ a remote.  ;D

What's the board below the Wood Naish??

A 9' X32" Foote.

This project is more than a little nerve wracking. I'm going to set up a few safety elements. You guys are making me nervous.

I put 100 pounds on the bottom of each leg and hauled it up. About gave myself a hernia. A center pulley will distribute the load more and double the mechanical advantage. Now I just need something to save the boards if the whole thing collapses.

I wouldn't trust pvc pipe to hold thousands of dollars of boards. It gets brittle with age and will eventually fail ( and not at a good time ) Try using some of those keNalu shafts if you must. A least they are guaranteed :-)

Water and oil don't mix

Can't go leaving watersports in a roomful of gearheads.... there's bound to be trouble.

K.I.S.S.

Throw a shipping container in the parking lot of that spiffy warehouse.... paint it  something cool, then line it with cushy carpet.....and walk your boards in.

Each board deserves its own honored spot.... they have earned it !

Your boards.... and shoulders will thank you.
