SUP Delusional Time Warp
« on: November 08, 2008, 06:20:10 AM »
A very strange phenomenon is happening with Stand Up Paddlers.     For some reason there are a lot of people who have become delusional on how long they have been doing SUP.    Usually if you have been doing it for 1 year or less your time doing it is recognized accurately.      After that a lot of people seem to add on a year or 2 or even more to how long they have been doing it...  SUPDTW is becoming a common thing!

Example:  Paddle Surf Hawaii is the first company dedicated to SUP Boards in the world.   I shaped my first SUP board in late 2005 but we opened our doors in mid 2006.     That is only 2-1/2 years ago.    I was in a conversation with someone who said when they first started they would always come to our site because nothing else was on the internet.     Later in the conversation he claimed to be doing SUP for 5-1/2  years.    HUH?

I went into another site the other day looking at peoples profiles and when asked how long have you been doing SUP I counted 12 people I know for a fact suffer from major SUPDTW.     I have been doing SUP for barely 4 years and that includes the earliest days I was on the Mickey Munoz board.    I started doing stand up then for months used a short paddle on my knees when surfing while doing flat water sup.      On the North Shore only Bonga Perkins, Vitor Marcal and Kamaki Worthington were doing it on occasion and that was it.     I know people on the North Shore who I made their first boards who have added years to their claimed time in...    Most of the main guys like Laird etc had started only 3 years prior at the most.   AT THE MOST!

So...   Are you in a SUPDTW??   If you are, you may want to look back at the calender and do some basic math.   ;D    ;)

if anybody can claim to have been doing this for a long time it just may be the arabs... from what i've read they've been riding a near-shore craft called the hasake to fish off of and catch waves on.

as it turns out the israeli life guards picked up on this and started using them for rescues.

I had to pull out all the stops for this one...

Let us see here:
Sept 2005 + Nov 2008 = 3.2 actual
Figure in the SUPDTW fiqure of 2.3 years:
2.3 years SUPDTW + 3.2 years ACTUAL = 5.5 years
Add on basic round up figures: .7
Grand total:
6 years.

Whats worse is when someone walks up to you, introduces themselves, states that they just moved here (Maui), and that they are going to be here forever so treat them like they have been here forever. Instant status? I don't think so.

I've been SUPing for one year? two years? Sometimes I forget that I've got some memory lapse!  :D :D

1996 or 1997, Biarritz: I saw an expression session with an old hawaiian  paddling on his knee with an paddle with a big board. Who is that man?

Well, I'm mainly talking about the current new revival of it and not the Beach Boys like Uncle Bobby and Pops and Uncle Z etc. ;D

Ha ha!   I feel like showing the people who have added at least 2 years to their time in but naaaaaah...   Let them feel experienced... ;)

I am starting an anti time warp movement.  Someone asks me how long I have been at it, I answer "2 months, but I really like it".  Less expectations that way.
