I was out this weekend with a girl on an 8'0" standard pearson laird (custom though) such a cool board.

I have to ditch about 40 liters on my next board, even if I keep the length.

Dare we say, "thinner is the new shorter?" for 2014?

Pretty much the way I would preffer to go.  If you start going too short you loose a lot of paddle power and stability. With a lot of the local crew going shorter and shorter, I guess there is a reason why I am the only.SUP out having fun in crap conditions?  Then, I am not obsessed with riding my SUP like a prone shortboarder. I have a lot more fun developing my paddle form and applying this to power the longer boards.

What would the length and width parameters defining a longboard vs. a shortboard?

I would presume that under 8'5" and over 29 inches wide on a SUP you would start to leave longboard territory, but what do I know?

For what it's worth, according to contest rules, Longboards start at 9' (or 3' feet overhead for kids).  Short boards can be no more than 2' overhead, so a 5'10" rider could theoretically compete in shortboard on a 7'10".

But, those are just numbers, longboarding is more about the shape of the board and style of riding.  Another board to look at in this category (low volume longboard or "thinner is the new shorter for 2014") is the Jimmy Lewis Black and Blue Machine.  Great pictures by the way!
