I had never seen this.   Has this been discussed before?

Claims 5 seconds decrease per 1000 yds.

I think it looks dangerous and should be banned around traditional SUPs, but it does look like a good core workout.

They are late to the game. Gary Leong has been playing with one for over 5 years now with similar modified  handles. If I remember correctly he had a problem at one of the BOP's with his paddle. I think they wanted to ban it but was allowed to race. Carbonarro has had one for almost as long. I think the latest Standup Journal has their ad with someone setting some record with a double blade on a SUP. So it may be new in Hawaii but it's old news here in California. It's has not generated much interest for a lot of different reasons. If you try one you will understand why.

Every bit as clever as they look.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

"Only weighs three pounds"!!  I've seen a much better grip system than the one this guy "invented", the big offset is not good. The one I saw was coaxial and rotated inside a rim--pretty elegant.

The stroke they are doing is pretty ugly, not the efficient body rotation and wing of a good surfski or kayak paddler, and not the reach and catch of a canoe paddle. Can't see that going anywhere.

Been discussed a bunch over the years, and I still think that your endurance with those would be diminished.
Much weaker stab and upper hand push power, sounds tiring.
It takes a quiver to do that.

Much less the inability to feather the blade, especially if paddling against the wind.

You can tell from the scrolling news headlines at the bottom of the broadcast that the video is from 2012. How'd all you Hawaiian Zoners keep this breakthrough a secret for so long???  :D

I think it would work great on a Hasaki board cause they're about 48" wide.

Long double bladed paddles have been around a LONG time for the Hasakeh...but if you have one you need to learn the official hasakeh song and dance..... ;) :o. You'll want to FF to .50 for the exciting part.... :P

It's a damn shame they had to focus their Navy's defense spending on actual defense rather than the entertainment industry.  The Beach Boys might have finally met their match in the "Singing Sailors".

(And the creative use of props really drives the song home) :o
