Focus Smoothie
« on: April 16, 2014, 02:03:42 PM »
Left my Fanatic Allwave 9.10 in Cali and missed it.  Couldn't find one locally, so I looked around and snagged a 10' Focus Smoothie.  Board is a lot of fun, does a good job of replacing the Allwave and gets in a little earlier.  Had to change the fins to JM's and it'd finally turn once I lost the 9" center fin.  Noserides well and has great stability (6'3" 265#).  I'd say it's one of the better high stability boards I've ridden.  Just thought I'd drop a quick review since I've not seen much on Focus boards.

Thanks Bigbear.

Quick question:  what construction is your Smoothie...and what's your opinion on its quality/strength?

It ain't over until the fat board sinks....

Could you toss up a few pics and dimensions of the board? Is it a 2013?

Bigbear, First things first - How's your leg doing? My first rideable SUP (12 foot Dolsey not rideable) was the 9' Focus smoothie in wood. 32" wide and only 4" thick. Ran it as a quad and learned how to catch waves on it. It was a great small wave nose rider, but a little heavy for me. Very stable. Sold it this winter to a guy I know who bought for his wife - hahaha!

It's the Aussie Pine.  It seems pretty solid, weighs about the same as the Fanatic and looks great.  It's a 2014-I think.  Starred the nose a little the first hr I had it-was having so much fun in 2-3' windblown FL beachies at high tide, that I was dropping into like a ft of water.  My own fault, but worth it!  Didn't affect water-tightness at all.

Leg is great! Thanks for asking.  Day I got off crutches, I flew to PR and surfed for a week w/o any pain.  Ortho decided no surgery, so I've been in the water a ton.  I had a 11'6" Dolsey and used to ride 8-10 ft Costa on it all the time-was a blast for my skill level then.  I agree the focus is a little heavy, but it's just part of the workout for me.  It makes me throw my weight around a bit more!  Plus it gets into everything and I catch all the reforms that I used to on a bigger board.
