High pressure isup inflator?
« on: April 14, 2014, 08:48:01 PM »
Anyone have a line on a decent isup inflator? I've got a couple isups which I never deflate as I don't want to spend 30 minutes pumping them up again. Anyone tried a sup inflator with good results? Most of the time I ask people about them they don't have much good to say.

Manual or automatic(electric)? Manual - I'd look at the Red Paddle Co HP Ezee pump (currently out of stock, sorry) but I'm demoing a K-220 in the coming weeks with the possibility of stocking them. I hear good things about them.
Auto - not found one that'll do the whole job in any timely fashion.

It seems like the balance or trade-off in any pump is volume versus pressure which is why most shop compressors have a storage tank.

I've been using a 12V portable tire compressor: ( http://goo.gl/Wf0NVz ) .  It works fine, but is a bit slow and does get hot after awhile.  There are lots of fairly cheap compressors available that are used by off-roaders.  Just note the duty cycle.

I also rigged up an adapter to use with other compressors like at the gas station or a shop.  It has a pressure gage and relief valve to avoid any risk of board damage but you could plumb it directly if you're not worried about that.

Mpr,  where did you get the parts to make that adapter.  Id like to put something together like that.

You might be able to get most of the parts at your local hardware store or industrial supply.  Otherwise I would recommend McMaster Carr

Pressure Gage: http://www.mcmaster.com/#atmospheric-pressure-gauges

Pop Valve: http://www.mcmaster.com/#9024k12

Adjustable Relief Valve: http://www.mcmaster.com/#48935k35

Tubing: http://www.mcmaster.com/#52375k15

SUP fitting: http://www.nrs.com/product/1470.1/new-short-h-r-fill-adapter

Note that high pressure for SUP (~20psi) is low pressure for industrial.
Brass will be way cheaper than stainless steel & smaller diameter fittings (1/4" vs. 3/8" or 1/2") could also save some $$.

Hope this helps.

Page 10 for manual pumps and from page 14 electric pumps. The electric pump inflates up to 14.5 psi with no problem. The battery pack lasts for 3 times for a 12'6 SB Astro race board. mistral sells the same pump with its logo on it.

What's really needed is a low/medium pressure combo--centrifugal fan to bring pressure up to 5 pounds or so, and then piston pump to go higher. Perhaps better yet a coaxial piston pump, one with a large diameter and one small. Hmmm. I could prototype that with my 3D printer. Drive the small diameter piston from the motor and let it drive the bigger piston. When pressure gets too high for the larger piston to stroke the smaller one still will. Like the slick bicycle hand pumps that automatically do low/high pressure.

I've been using my shop compressor with this adapter on my Lakeshore Paddleboard Heavenly Air & can pump it to 17 psi in about 2 or 3 minutes.

http://www.slingshotsports.com/sup/products/parts-accessories/high-pressure-sup-inflator-sku-14580000

I haven't seen it yet, but am told that Inland Board Sports has an adapter with the air pressure gauge integrated in it, which would simplify the process a bit.        http://www.inlandboardsports.com/

I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but plan on picking up a Slime heavy duty tire pump soon. I'm hoping it will do the job reliably & should run on my truck or boat battery.

Just ordered the slingshot adapter. It's nice to hear a decent endorsement.

sup romer,I have several isups like you. I blow 1st one up with Bravo pump to 14.5 then use a high pressure air pump I bought at Advance auto Parts to pump 1st board to 18psi while the Bravo pump is pumping up the second board. It only takes the pump from Advance a couple of minutes to go to 18 psi on the first board. It doesn't even get hot and is ready to pump second board to 18psi when the Bravo is done. This pump was only $59.95 at Advance and has a digital gauge with auto shut off that I've found to be accurate and has worked perfectly for me.
I'm currently at my Daughters in Georgia helping out while my grandson is having surgery but I'll post the name and part # for the Advance pump when I get home Fri. or Saturday.I've also used this pump to inflate a very wide 15 inch tire on my wife's Camero and it did great.

The pump is the BellAire 5000. The part # at Advance Auto is 22-1-35000-8. They were $59.95 when I got mine but their site now has them on sale for $52.95. I have found the digital psi gauge very accurate, reads in .5lbs(15-15.5-16-16.5 etc)and the auto shut off has always worked although I still constantly monitor it.

Just be aware that "compressors" (as in the one at the gas station) put a lot of moisture in to the air - - which will end up inside your board.

Hand pumps are the best - as there is no moisture.
They are a little more of a work out - - but isn't that the point of paddling?
