The reality is that there are NEVER many people in Abu Dhabi. All that crazy construction, all those home owned by wealthy Euros and Oil Sheiks -- are empty 99% of the time. I haven't been, but I watched a documentary about it recently. Strange place. They're building a Guggenheim Museum, a Louvre, and a NYU. Basically blank check for all of it. They showed pictures of Ferrari World--monster place, empty. The F1 race has a sprinkling of people in the stands.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that they'd fund an event that no one goes to--chump change. But someone is being pretty smart about getting these Waterman League events paid for.

Something to consider.  A very dark side to this place or the whole UAE in general.

Actually that's Dubai. Adu Dhabi is the same but different.

I don't suppose that the US has a dark side.

Yabba Dhabi Doo!

I don't know if anybody really watched it or not, but Kai Lenny won. What was really amazing were the boards they were using. Mo Freitas was on a 6'10" x 22". They never really said anything about the rules, or if they did I was sleeping, but I guess that they have to be standing up for about 30 seconds before the wave arrives. Some people were over knee deep bobbing around waiting. Funny to watch.
Also there was no one there but the competitors. I guess stand up paddling in a pool in the middle of the desert is not a big draw. I found it strange and boring at the same time. The announcer droning on and on could put a speed freak to sleep.

Mo Freitas was on a 6'10" x 22

I want one for a "real" surfboard.

The racing is way better, but where's the HD stream.

Creek's vids are 100x more entertaining than this homogenized ver of a wave. BORING!
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"
